Cover or no Cover?
Just ran into a problem I wasn\'t expecting. I just moved into a new place in Solana Beach (SD), and found that our parking assignment switched from a carport in the alley, to one that is two cars deep and visible to a residential street. When parking I talked to a neighbor who said that cars get broken into all the time in all of the car ports (so location of the port seems negligible at this point I guess).
So as a possible solution, i went out and bought a car cover IMMEDIATELY- partially to protect it from the elements and partially from the shitheads wanting to steal someone else\'s stuff. I bought a lock and cable as well so the cover couldn\'t be stolen, and won\'t easily be removable. My question to you is whether or not this is a good idea to deter potential problems? My car gets a lot of attention unfortunately because it\'s loud on cold starts and I have to pull in and out slowly to avoid scraping. It also happens to by far be the nicest car parked in the car ports and on the streets. So uncovered they can see its a nice car, and covered they could assume its probably a nice car.... I really have no idea what to do, and the car will likely sit from Monday to Friday at this spot. I appreciate any help and insights, I\'m pretty bummed on this. *also tried renting a garage spot at a complex across the street and they said its against their policy. **also if this is an old topic, please send me to the thread. Internet isn\'t up yet, so the search button is slightly out I my reach on my phone.

Wow, what a bad situtation to be in.
I'd go with the car cover since you already have it. Will it help? I'm sure it will deter many, but will pique the curiosity of a few. Either way, make sure you don't lapse on your insurance!

Aw man that sucks! Sounds like you're screwed either way. Maybe wouldn't be that bad if you drove it daily, but sitting there 5days a week may bring some unwanted attention. I'd go with the car cover. Without a BMW logo.

Yea, I was so amped on this place and now I'm kinda down on having moved in here. It's just having to even worry about stuff like this makes me want to sell the car and get a beater nobody would mess with if you left it unlocked and the keys in the ignition. Love the car to death but you realize people are assholes and creates so much stress for having something nice (for me atleast).
The cover does say BMW on the front unfortunately, by I was thinking to run the cover in dirt and shit to make it not look bad haha

Personally...
A cover would be a hassle to constantly put on/lock/take off/etc. Make sure you have full coverage insurance (comprehensive). Most breakins and random damage can be covered under comprehensive without an increase in premiums. Granted you do have to pay your deductible.

I know exactly how you feel man. If thats your car in your sig than its pretty modded by the looks of it. If I was in your parking situation I would turn the car back to completely stock to draw less attention.

Move again or reapproach the lot across the street and make them an offer they can't refuse for an enclosed spot.

Seems like a real pain to mess with a cover every time you use your car. Obviously after you live there for a few weeks, people (a-holes, really) who see your car and want to f-with it will ultimately see what a nice car you have. I don't think the cover is going to distract them.
You've obviously dropped a ton on your car + mods. I'm a bit confused on why you didn't find a place with a garage? |

good call. The units are a good 5 minute bike ride. Time to invest in a good bike, and it looks like the car will be a weekend luxury only way i'll sleep well at night really

I parked my M3 at the Marriott in Torrance for a few months. I think they charged me $100/month. Talk to valet guys. Not sure if it is convenient, but some hotels allow, or at least the parking guys do. If you only drive on week-ends, being real convenient would not seem to be an issue. I would definitely do the cover and one without the roundel. No guarantees, but I am sure would help.

Don't cover it. Eventually the cover will wear the paint on the heavy contact points (bumpers, rocker panels etc) especially when the wind is blowing. In the long run the cover will do more damage then what it's protecting your car from. Learned the hard way. If you do use the cover, don't use the cable - even worse. I've experienced serious paint damage I've to my trucks and rv's using noah type covers - same material used in BMW covers. They don't have to be on long, just a good windy day, a little grit, a dash of friction and you've got paint damage.

All I'll say is my Dad bought a cover from a very well known company for his 78 Corvette after spending $5k on a paint job and the cover RUINED the paint.

Only real downside of a car cover is that your paint swirls will multiply, which is especially a problem on black cars. |

Hey man i live 20 minutes from Solana Beach, I live in Rancho Santa Fe. Solana Beach is not a good place to park your car outside because no offense there are many hispanic live in that area and there are gangs.
Anyway hope to see you in the future san diego meets. |

Thanks for all the input. Just found a gated spot a block away for $100/month, so hopefully that's problem solved
