What is the preferred Winter Tire for our M3?
The M will be driven about 95% of the time, and will use an FX35 during the heavier snow days.
I have OEM 18" rims for winters, and am looking for feedback on what tires work the best with our M3? Dunlop 3Ds, Micheling PA3, others? Thanks, |

I think those ones you mentioned are all pretty good, and there is no "one" best...
I consulted Ben at Tirerack. Great guy by the way, and easy to reach via phone. Since I picked up at the border, was cheaper for me than local. For the set of (winter) wheels I have, he recommended LM-60. But I think the other brands you mentioned may not have performance snows in the 19" that would fit my replica (but with OEM fitment) ZCP wheels.

did you simply pick up the tires and cross the border, or did you bring the rims and have them mounted? I'm interested in your experience as This remains an option forme as well. Thanks.

I'm having them put together locally. It might have been easier (and cheaper) to have had them put together there, but they arrived at different times. I probably wouldn't have brought rims I would have already had. Didn't want any fuss at the border. With nothing in my car crossing over into the States, I had no issues. I had the receipt ready for the tires and wheels. They asked me both times why I was crossing. When I showed them the receipts, they were like, "Oh, okay" as if they've seen it before. I've calculated that, even with the expenses of travelling to the border (twice), etc., I've saved a total of $500 I've used CBI USA a few times now to store items, and give them a thumbs-up. www.cbiusa.com

They were mounted balanced and delivered to Burlington by UPS within 3 days of order from Tire Rack in the states. Could not find a price even remotely close in Canada. The PA3's are highly rated - but lean toward winter performance. Given the amount of snow we get any more in the GTA I preferred the performance over a few of the other tires that were better snow rated. I use spacers on the front and rear 12mm front and 15mm rear MS with both this setup and my 19" summer staggered setup. |

The BMW recommended winter tire setup is square. They don't recommend use of the OEM rims to mount the winter tires. The recommended setup is also a narrower tire (235 on 18" rims all around if I remember correctly).

I wasn't suggesting that you buy their package. I was just pointing out that the recommended winter tire is a narrower one on an 18" rim.
