Offer in on an M3. DCT question.

Hey everyone, I'm newish to the forum and just placed an offer on a new dealer stock M3, and I'm hoping it is accepted.

A quick question regarding the M3 DCT. I drove a 335is DCT the other day and no matter which mode I had the car in if I was cruising along and hit the gas, the car would shift down. For example I would be cruising at say 50mph in m6 and I would not touch the paddles and go to accelerate briskly and it would drop to M2 or M3. Does the M3 dct do the same thing or will it hold the higher gear until I tell it to downshift via the paddle or the knob? Conversely, will it hold a low gear and bounce off the rev limiter if I decide I don't want it to shift up?

In M mode, it won't automatically downshift unless you press the accelerator past the kickdown point, nor will it upshift even at redline.

Ok, the kick down point it the little notch feeling right at the bottom of the pedal travel? Is the car at full throttle right before that 'click'?

Yes, it's at full throttle. The kick down point is pretty firm, so you wouldn't go past it unless you were trying to do so (or if you were just being careless with applying the throttle).

It's quite possible I was careless with the throttle on the 335is.

Thanks for the info guys, hopefully my offer gets accepted I'm pretty excited about the M3

Regarding the DCT, there is no such thing as M mode. It's either D mode or S mode. D mode is like automatic mode. S mode is like manual mode. In D mode, it will obviously downshift when you accelerate. In S mode, it will NOT downshift unless you call for a downshift.
M mode refers to the button on the steering wheel that calls up predetermined EDC, Power, DCT, and DSC settings.

Maybe the 335is is a little different. In drive it was displaying D1-D7, if I shifted the lever over it would show S1-S7 but still automatically shift, then if I selected a gear with either the paddle or by pushing the lever back and forth it would display M1-M7.

I have not driven an M3 with DCT.

Sounds like it has 2 auto modes, D for normal and S for 'sport'. And it also has the manual mode, 'M'. I might be wrong though. IIRC it was like this in my Z4 Roadster with steptronic.

It sounds like the 335is dct is a lot less similar to the M3 dct than I had assumed.

I think I have the answer to my questions though.

Wait for another month or so and the price should be even better. Gas guzzlers will be sitting on the dealer's lots. Plus all sales in general will drop as the economy nose drives further with $5 a gallon gasoline. Time to buy an M3 will be late this spring or early summer.

Goodluck on your purchase, if you offer doesn't get accepted. I have mine in the classified section, something to think about with full warranty and hook you up with a tax break.

M-DCT is the way to go!!

I was told by my dealer that the DCT in the 335is is different compared to the M3 DCT, something along the lines of not having all the features from the M3..... "S" settings I guess

Sorry, I was a bit tired when I typed my reply. But you're right. I was referring to S-mode in my post.

They didn't accept my offer. Boo. Looks like I'll be ordering the car exactly as I want it from Golferr.

Euro delivery, PC redelivery, sounds like a plan to me. Only problem is that loooong wait.
