Like I said earlier in this thread that I've been following both the ZL1 and the 2013 GT500. Where the ZL1 has been focusing on track prowess and all the engineering that went into it going fast on a racetrack. When the ZL1 was given to the press to test drive it was in 2 areas... The street to show how civil and good it drives as a DD and then the second half is the track. I think most people that buy an M3 prefer track use and DD I know I do. Until the GT500 starts telling car testers to test it on well known tracks it's still just a straight line car for me and that's why I stopped myself from ordering it and ordered another E92 M3. At least the ZL1 can boast an amazing lap of 7:41 at the ring and it beat out the 2011 GTR at VIR. We know the new GT500 can go fast yet again but we already knew that old GT500's were always fast in straight lines. I'm looking forward to the next chassis GT500 and ZL1. Then they might have my business.

Let's face it, the M3 is a luxury car with sports equipment. The GT500 is the opposite; sports car with some luxury equipment. There is nothing BMW has that can even touch the new GT500, and I would bet my life savings that even the next generation M3 won't even come close to the GT500 on the Nurburgring. You bought an M3 because you wanted performance and class. Maybe the GT500 isn't quite classy enough for you, but the performance it offers is unrivaled by most other cars out there; especially for the price. |

The new GT500 is probably the best bang for the buck. Interior is not that bad and actually came a long way.
The seats are not as plush as an M3, and the doors and dash leave a bit to be desired. But the big fat steering wheel covered in suede and the shift knob is solid feeling leaving the car to feel very euro at times. I think the 2015 redesign will offer more luxury to command a following in europe. |

I give it plenty of credit after watching the 13+ minute vid. But my feelings have not changed with the overall look of the car. Our M's blow the stangs appearance away, inside and out, except for the front. I think there equally menacing. I'm bias tho, I never liked any stang, old or new. I don't even like their trucks. Just MO. Don't want to start any wrangling with Ford lovers...

Competition is a great thing. Even if you don't like this Mustang, you can be sure that BMW is taking notice.

I don't really get why everyone bashes the mustang for being "fast in a straight line" when most people on here really are all about that. Babbling on about torque and such.
Anyway, this thread had me intrigued. I went down to the ferd dealership. No gt500s available for test drive, so I figured I'd test drive the boss 302 to get an idea of the chassis setup and f-n-f. Materials aren't great inside, but it has come a long way from what I remember. No rattles. And seriously.. That exhaust note, amazing. It doesn't rev up fast or particularly high but it does make power at a long range leading up to redline. The steering was impeccable--very similar to E46 M3 ZCP (best bmw steering imo). Clutch felt good, shifter action was great. In fact from an overall tactile driving perspective I have to say I liked it better than my m3. Hate to say it, really. You guys (including myself) are always going on about how the E9x lacks rawness, even compared to e46. Well.. Here's your car. The boss has that extra bit of tuning to pull the 5L motor a little further away from "american" and a little closer to euro. On the other hand, visibility is terrible, styling is pretty cheesy, live rear axle is quite noticeable over even the slightest of rough roads. But I mean I really think its worth a test drive. And that's just talking about the boss. I'm wondering if I shouldn't jump on the gt500 bandwagon before I have to "settle down" with kids and what not. I'm curious what you guys think--particularly just from the user inputs perspective (steering, throttle, power, clutch). I loved it.

If this car can be anywhere near as good of a DD for every day driving as our M3s, I will have to consider this in the near future. Amazing that car isn't subject to a Gas Guzzler Tax, but we are.
This bring me to my next point/question. Jeremy Clarkson said that the current generation 5-Series is darn good, that its hard to justify the extra premium for an M5. So is the GT500 worth the extra $10K-$15K premium over a Boss 302? I've never driven either, but I've heard nothing but praise for the 302. |

Evolution Performance offers a tune, intake & catless pipes for it. For the ~$2K they advertise you can add 100HP & 75 Lbs Torque.

I came VERY close to putting a downpayment on the GT500. None to test drive so I drove a mustang GT that is supposed to be a competitor to the M3.
After driving it for a week over the bumpy montreal roads and feeling that terrible rear suspension I changed my mind. Competition is great bit until Ford puts a good IRS I will pass on the current body. Waiting for my second E92 M3 which should be delivered in August.
