Car won't start.

Vehicle: 2011 E92 M3
  • Drove the car yesterday when outside temperature was ~45*F.
  • Last night temperatures dropped to <20*F with a serious wind chill.
  • Went to start vehicle this morning and it wouldn't start (Outside Temp ~36*F)
  • Tried to start the car just now and still has same issue (Outside Temp ~55*F)

What happens when trying to start:
  • Key fob unlocks car
  • Car recognizes key when not in ignition
  • Car recognizes key when in ignition
  • Accessory mode turns on
  • Receive message that "Ignition switched on"
  • Depress clutch and press ignition

All these actions happen at the same time after attempting to start the car..
  • Engine does not attempt to turn over
  • Noticeable "electronic" noise comes from dashboard area (hard to describe)
  • Gas gauge and several other gauges go from normal position to below 0
  • Navigation and other electronics on dash go black and then reset

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Check your voltage. Sounds like a dead battery or could be the battery cable issue behind the glove box. Wiggle it and see if it makes a connection.

Sounds like the starter motor or fuse. The sound you're hearing could be the relay for the starter.

You need a starter.

Check the battery voltage as you try to start it, that's free! If the voltage doesn't drop significantly and the voltage comes back to fairly normal voltage, it's not your battery.

Then open your wallet for a new starter! Mine would go through all you mentioned, then there would be an audible click from the starter, symptoms started about a week before it went dead for sure, we would get the starter click, try again and it would fire up.

I just replaced my starter a week ago.

I had a similar issue in my e46 m3 where everything would be good until I turn the key to crank it up and everything would black out and the instrument cluster would make a buzzing noise. Turned out I had a considerable amount of corrosion on the positive battery terminal.

The seller dealer had a lot of issues with my vehicle and it was traced to a failing EDC module after I received the car and took it to my local dealer. Car wouldn't go to sleep, thus the battery drained.
