Brembo BBK: Steering Wheel Vibration Under Braking.

Hey Guys, so I have a steering wheel vibration only under braking. Just had my winters balanced and an alignment done.

So my question is can the Brembo Rotors be shaved to get rid of any uneven wear (I'm assuming that's what it is). Or do I have to buy new Rotors?

Thanks all!

Double check all the mounting clips on each caliper. They should be there and mounted correctly -yes, the front clips can be mounted upside down and create vibration at braking by not securing the pads correctly.

I would check that but I really trust my installer. He's built race cars and has done many BBK installations. I'll still ask him, but I have doubt that thats is the answer.

Anything else that it can be?

How did you bed in your brakes? A vibration may be caused by an uneven transfer of pad material onto your rotors, causing a judder in your steering wheel. This could be mistaken for warped rotors. Make sure you bed in your new brakes properly.

Did you have any steering vibration under braking with your summer wheels installed?

Also agree with dvpoudlar26 - try rebedding your brakes to see if that solves your vibration problem.

Yes I had the same vibration with my summer wheels on.

I bought the BBK used, owner claimed to have put 3k miles on them. I figured he did the bedding process. Maybe I have to do it again? If so whats the correct procedure?

Thanks Guys!

So should I do this process if they were already bedded in? Should I contact the person I bought them from and ask the question.

Does it hurt to do the bedding process again?

No - just re-bed the brakes.

There are alot of videos on how to properly bed in your brakes. Basically, just find a long straight, get up to speed, and progressively hit the brakes without coming to a full stop, then speed up and repeat. If you come to a full stop during the bedding process, that can also result in an uneven transfer of pad material. If you re-balanced your wheels and got an alignment done recently, that shimmy or judder in your wheel is probably because of uneven film transfer.

I have had this issue. Only would vibrate under high speed braking thou. You can get a special set of pads that smooth the rotor surface down, then your good to go!

So this has almost completely gone away. It's just gentle braking now. I still haven't rebedded the pads. It's been raining non stop here.

Maybe the previous owner used it for track, possibly pad deposits on the rotor? If so, the vibration will go away after some driving.

this is USUALLY a major contributing factor in wheel shimmy from rotors/pads...

Not warped rotors, its pad deposits left on the rotors causing the issue

That's great to hear. Looks like it was indeed an uneven pad deposit problem. As you drove more on the streets, the uneven layer got gradually scrubbed off. Hopefully after a few more days the vibration will go away completely.

This is very common if you go to the track with OEM pads. The vibration goes away after a few days on the street.

I still have a slight shimmy at what I believe to be normal street braking. Definitely more on the gentle side.

I still need to try to rebed the brakes, but just normal street driving hasn't cured the issue yet!

I would recommend driving normally for a bit longer to see if the shimmy goes away completely. I typically lean towards wiping the rotor clean before putting on another transfer layer.

Okay so I'm still getting a vibration, but now its only at a certain speed. The steering wheel gives a shudder braking from 50-40ish.

Very strange, any thoughts on what this can be?

Try giving Race Technology (Brembo's US distributor) a call. They can probably help you resolve your problem.

They will send a set of racing pads to bed the BBK rotors again to scrub any pads deposits. That will fix this vibration issue.

I know... I went thru the same issue and Race Technology fixed it that way.
