Smartphone Integration Problem
On my new '09 E92 M3 Coupe with smartphone integration, everything works perfectly on my iPhone 3G running V2.1. You just plug the iPhone into the cradle (extra $ of course) and the phone charges and shows the phone book and is perfect....except that I can't access my music on the iPhone, a feature of the smartphone integration. BMW is now telling me that my iPhone running V2.1 is incompatible with the "not-so" smartphone integration. Has anyone with the smartphone integration been able to get everything running, including music with their iPhone? I would hate to have to plug my iPod into the USB port along with my iPhone in the cradle. I only want to carry 1 item...my iPhone.

3G iPhone cradle? Didn't think the 3G iPhone snap-in was available yet! Are you sure your not using the old iPhone snap-in?
I also have the 6NF smart phone integration but have been told that the 3G iPhone snap-in won't be available until the end of the year at best! |

Where did you get the cradle? Do you have the older one from BMW Accessories that was designed for the first generation iPhone? If so, yeah, that won't work and you need the new one. Both the cradle itself and the base-plate need to be updated.
Check out the audio forum, rmmcdaniel has posted pics of the new base plate, which his car actually came from the factory with. It was confirmed by another member to have new connections vs. the old one which are no doubt necessary to get audio. BMW seems to have dropped the ball on two counts. First they neglected to include the base-plate on early builds which were equipped with 6NF, and secondly they have neglected to deliver an iPhone 3G adapter in a timely fashion. |

what's sad is that i'm not even surprised. and i'll bet i'm not the only one. IMO, bmw should have waited on 6NF until all the products were available. If they already made it for oct 08, what is two more months? in this case 6NF would have truly been fully compatible and available.

so sounds like even though I paid for the 6NF there is actually no way to use 6NF since there is no holder for the iPhone (3g or 2g) ??
JIO... where did you get your cradle then? |

Then we'll probably need another Progman update because the interface SW won't work correctly, etc, etc

So the snap in cradle on BMW accessories web site is only for the old phone? I guess I have to find out what my CA has ordered for me (at the dealer now). My car comes early next week, but it seems I might have to wait some more to get the smartphone integration ...

dipan, as soon as you get your car, try out your iPhone and let us know if this optional connector per your link does work with the 09 6NF ... btw, do you have the iPhone 3g or 2g?

According to bryanwxup who is in Germany (where dealerships tend to be a bit more in the know) the 3G cradle adapter may be available over there this coming Monday the 17th. Hopefully this is so. Even us pre-6NF people should (I hope) be able to use this adapter. |

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185268 Check out apw's post with pics. In order for the old original iPhone adapter to work, it would have to have been conceived with knowledge that 6NF would one day be available, and would have to have the proper design to make contact with the pins that apw has circled in the pic. Now, its possible that this is the case, and it will indeed support 6NF. But for now I remain skeptical. It would be great if someone who has a 6NF car, and whose car actually shipped with the baseplate, and who has the older iphone original cradle adapter, would actually try this out. But there's a lot of if's in there and probably by the time some has tried it, the 3G cradle will be available anyway. Or maybe not. Edit, I guess I should have read JIO's OP better. I thought he lacked the baseplate. But actually, it seems has tried exactly what I said above and that was his reason for posting to begin with - no music playback. 3G ... I also heard back from my CA saying that the one they have is the latest one for the iPhone. Not sure exactly what that means, but will let you know ...

I am here at my BMW dealer as I write this.... I sat down with the parts manager and he pulled some late breaking faxes from his file which shows that there is a part for the iPhone 3G with software rev 2.1 ... now it did not have a part number next to it, but he will find out how to acquire this iPhone 3G adapter and get me on asap.
Will update when I have more info... btw, I did NOT see an iPhone 2G on that list, but I cannot guarantee it wasn't there.... |

For you 6NF owners out there that now have the base plate .... if you remove the parking brake cover and have a look inside, you will probably see the base plate connections. You will probably see, the external antenna connection, connection for the power and then the big mystery ... how it hooks into the 6FL connection ... or maybe it will show nothing and its a big disapointment :-( |

I got the cradle from BMW which was listed in their parts catalog. At the time I assumed that the smartphone integration was fine the cradle completed it for the iPhone. The cradle on the back said V1.0. I snaps into the center console fine and the phone works perfectly, just not the music. I tried plugging my iPhone into the USB port and it gave me a warning that the USB was not designed for the iPhone, yet worked fine along with the music (charges, full phonebook, charges, etc.). The only thing missing is hooking up with the car antenna for better reception.
The iPhone cradle is a very tight fit and if you have a case on your phone, you need to remove the case to snap into the cradle. I didn't like that. I have since returned the old cradle for a refund. |

I just heard from the parts manager per above post... he says that the iPhone 3G bracket is not in manufacturing and was told about 2-3 months for delivery. He told me to call in another 4 weeks for an update.
So das ist dat. |

Well, my car came in and I can confirm that while the original 1.0 version baseplate adapter for the iPhone fits, functionality is less-than-smartphone as above. We'll have to wait for the new version. My 2009 6NF E93, btw, does have a baseplate at the bottom of the armrest compartment. There's a dummy baseplate adapter installed from the factory
