Exhaust mod under warranty

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to the mod topic, so wanted to get some feedback regarding doing an exhaust mod when the car is still under warranty. I have about another year of original coverage left plus the car is CPO. I'm considering modding the exhaust but I'm wondering how that may impact my warranty, if something needs to be fixed other than the exhaust. Appreciate any views. Thanks!

ymmv with your service adviser. Best bet is to buy a separate OEM exhaust, mod that one, and keep your spare OEM on one hand in case you need warranty work. (or vice versa, buy a modded exhaust, and keep you current one on hand).

I like this option b/c it also allows you greater flexibility in case you do the mod and if you realize you hate it and want to offload it to grantmax , you still have your OEM one on hand.

Typically unless the dealer can prove that the modification caused the malfunction that the car is being serviced for, the should not be able to deny the claim.

This is a VERY stripped down explanation of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act

I had mine done and had no issues. They won't notice unless the warranty work being done is on the mufflers.

Depends how strict your dealer is on mods. If they are more lenient you should be fine. If they are picky about every single item of the car being left stock, then i would wait.

I agree with BzsBimmer. Also, if the dealer can prove that the problem caused by the installed aftermarket accessory, they will just void certain warranty claim and not all.

If you're only changing the mufflers, it shouldn't be a problem. Removing cats on the other hand is another story.

I'm thinking cat back mod so hopefully that's the case.

Would it be a different story if it's BMW MPE? Would that be considered OEM so no issues with warranty?

Thanks guys. Helpful feedback.

See my sig for my mods, all the work I have had done (battery replaced, lights repaired, regular maintenance and check up, etc) on my car was covered under my CPO warranty. Not one time did they mention anything about my mods or voiding anything.

Its all about the dealer and relationship.

Yeah the MPE is OEM so no warranty issues with it.

I agree. Although I think grantmax said that he is considering going with a flowmaster straight pipe. He swears the standard truck one sounds balls good on the S65 motor.

I think grantmax currently is using the purple hornies system he bought from JEGS, based on the recommendation from EJT86

Sold my very expensive exhaust and now am just running straight pipes to tips. Still with stock x pipe and cats and sounds just as good if not better than every other exhaust I had. (and I have had @ 6 setups). A little loud and a bit of drone but cheap for the amazing noise you get plus a good amount of weight removed from the rear.

hmm, personally I prefer the exhaust cutouts set up. I think I would get tired of the racket everyday.

@edward is right. I'm going eBay 4-2-1 mufflers with electronic cutout and glasspacks. V8 baby.

OP - OEM mod won't cause you any pain. Most dealers and service advisors don't know the difference between cold start idle and regular idle. Also, the general rule is "if the mod caused the issue, you won't have coverage". Hard to make a case for a modded muffler causing water pump failure.

The risk of a PROPERLY done oem exhaust mod causing issues that would affect your warranty is next to zero.
