I am going to have to hit up a few meets to hear some exhausts in person before I decide....too many damn choices! Besides, even though the vids are great, it is always different hearing something in person.

I'd like to chime in on the dyno issue as well. Mostly siding with ihlyn here.

Let's leave multiple dyno manufacturers on different days with different techs, different temperatures and different correction factors out of the equation. Those things are clearly diversions. These are simple variables that will produce different true power outputs and different dyno results . A good dyno should under identical back to back runs be able to produce consistent results. If not indeed all bets are off. I certainly agree that if the variability of the test process is greater than the size of the change you are trying to measure then there is indeed no point. I do not think this is the case.

Dyno a stock M3, do a few runs and document the results AND the VARIATION among runs. Now swap just the exhaust and repeat the multiple runs. If the exhausts produce more power you absolutely should be able to see it.

My suspicion is that the 10 lb weight savings and very small hp gains you will find will cause folks to seriously question their purchase. Now don't call me a hater. I am pondering an aftermarket system just for better sounds and better looks (need to be able to see that beautiful rear diff cover...).

So say you got a 10hp power increase from changing exhaust on your car... Is there really anybody on this forum that could notice the difference between a 414hp car and a 424hp car? I seriously doubt it.

I do agree with that. As long as you purchase an exhaust for sound, looks and a small weight savings you should be satisfied. However, losing 20 lbs and having +15 hp would be nice. Not sure such an exhaust exists though that would not ruin the car as a dd.

but its nicer to know that you gained 10 hp, what if you lost 10 hp and you couldnt feel it but sounds better. i would still take the 10 hp performance gain over a less performing better sounding exhaust.

This is the kind of consistency I was talking about above. +/- 2 (hp and ft lb) on both the hp and torque runs.

Link.

and if you add other mods would you be happy that your exhaust that makes less hp cancels out their gains?

Guys, we've already beaten the Dyno conversation to a pulp!

First, our car was out for nearly a month going to, staying in, and coming from California from it's European Car photoshoot.

Second, we're getting our car Dynoed at Fall-Line Motorsports ASAP.

Third, we will still give the same disclaimer we have been. Any individual can dyno a car and show a gain or loss that is greater than the real numbers, so it's not worth saying "Here's the gain, try to replicate it." If we dyno the car and guarantee 10 hp, anyone can go back, make the car LOSE 10hp, and we're out of luck.

Again: It is far too easy to fudge dyno numbers. We'll release dyno gains to ease people's curiosity, but we can't promise that you'll get the same gains on your dyno at your elevation, humidity, and dyno settings. In my eyes, that makes dyno numbers pointless. Dyno evaluations are useful when tuning, or when comparing mods that produce a HP gain greater than 15%, not for exhausts.

I just got off the phone with Fall-line. Their dyno is being worked on this week and should be back up and running next week. We will get our M3 there ASAP.
