Ok - don't laugh...
But someone please explain for me:
- what section of the exhaust system 'X-pipes' covers?
- what the resonators do (louder, quieter, change tone?)
thanks

Normally the X-pipe covers the exhaust system section between the headers and the pipes that connect the rear mufflers, the X is the section around half way (in the M3) through the exhaust system. The design of the X pipes improves scavenging and quietens the system down from a dual independant type system. The X-pipe generally replaced the older H-pipe design used in earlier designs in the 80s' (and is still used by some manufacturers like Akrapovic in their exhausts)
The stock X pipe is a crush bent manufactured system, an economical way of mass producing OE exhaust systems. Quality exhaust systems are mandrel bent which increases performance and flow. All the systems I do are mandrel bent. You can really feel a big difference in performance when one of these are fitted.
Getting the sound right takes a large investment in time with these. They can cause excessive rasp and get very loud. My systems are designed for performance and sound with larger resonators than stock to compensate for the high flow cats.
Below is a simple demo of how an X pipe works:

This is a photo of a complete X-pipe with the crossing under the centre support bracket

Are there any videos of the resonated, catted x pipe paired with the stock rear section?

I don't have one, but there was that exact setup went into a car in Melbourne last week. I went for a run in the car and was quite surprised just how good it made the stock muffler sound. At low RPM it was quieter than stock and does not have that drone even the stock muffler gets between 1500-2000 RPM, but under load the stock system sounds surprisingly good.

Here is a comment from a member who got that exact setup......

Just wanted to let you know everything went well with my X-Pipe install. It sounds good and exceeds my expectations. The combo with OEM back box works great i.e. at partial throttle when cruising its quiet but when I dip into the throttle it's like the Daytona Speedway! Nice.. I'm pleased with it. Great work.

Also, the car drives great even with the existing tune. At WOT from 3rd to 4th the shifts are smoother with less drive line shock no doubt due to less back pressure. I have yet to re dyno but my buttometer says torque has increased more so than rwhp.

Do you know why the tune reflash is even needed for hi flow cats!

I recommend ditching the hideous ball sacks that are the oem mufflers and fitting up a set of Dave Dee's mufflers and couple it with the catted and resonated x pipe of his. You will love it

Haha that may end up happening.
I actually like the sound of the stock exhaust, was just curious if this set up increased performance without changing the sound too much.

Performance is greatly enhanced, sound down low is quiet and less drone than stock, but more aggressive under load. It's quite good for the giant nutsack really
