Early spring HPR day & NASA

Haven't been out to the track since early October in Pueblo... really been itching to get back out there! llia and I have been talking about heading out to HPR either 2/20 or 2/26. Thought I would see if anyone else here is interested in joining us?

Also just wanted to let you know that the NASA season is about to begin (3/19 @ HPR)... Crazy thing is, they've asked me to take the instructor training! I really like their HPDE program and thought I'd throw it out there as an option for anyone wanting to get more regular track time with instructors (additional to BMW CCA anyway).

Thanks for the post. Probably will not make it out there in February but will take a look at NASA. Haven't done their days before but sounds like it might be a good time.

Hope some others want to join us for HPR.

What is NASA? I met someone at the ice gymkhana who was talking about it being a car club, but when I google "nasa bmw" I get tons of articles about BMW working with the NASA that launches rockets.

BMW worked with NASA to launch rockets?!! Cool. Also very interesting... they've had their hands in about everything, haven't they?

Anyhow, that's not the same group of folks. NASA is short for National Auto Sport Association. (There's also another club that folks run with SCCA - Sports Car Club of America). You could say they're car-agnostic. If it's got 4 wheels, and engine and passes the tech inspection you can "run" with them in whichever capacity meets your fancy. You can take Driver's Education (HPDE), run in time trials or full-blown race. The local Rocky Mountain chapter has a schedule that starts in March and goes through October. Last year I started in HPDE 2, got signed off almost immediately to HPDE 3 (I believe because of the fantastic instruction I received from BMW CCA DE's) and advanced to HPDE 4 at the last event in Pueblo last year. I've enjoyed the regular seat time, classroom sessions with other car-nuts and general camaraderie. We even drove to Hastings, NE with them last year just to try a new track out and had a great time. This year... maybe Hallett, OK.

Rain/snow showers are currently forecast for Friday and Sunday. http://www.weather.com/outlook/drivi...e/tenday/80201

That wedges Saturday between some non-ideal weather that could shift on us.

Do we want to aim for sometime mid-late March instead? (I'm out until the 12th or so.)

I know! I think I inadvertently ticked off Mother Nature. (Same thing happened to me last April... Every weekend I was planning to go out? Snow.) Anyhow, I checked the calendar and the next lapping days are 3/6 and 3/12. Weekend after that (19 & 20) is the NASA event, with the following weekend on hold for NASA if the prior weekend's weather doesn't hold. Otherwise lapping days I'm sure. I've signed up and husband & I will be out if the track is open - we'll just be hanging out in the enclosed trailer with the propane heater if it's chilly (pretty much a guarantee, I know). Or sitting in the E90 with the heated seats on

Chris, what are you driving? We just rebuilt an E36 M-ish track car, pretty much from the frame out. Let me know if you need any help!

This M3 is mostly just going to be a Highway monster. My last two were track rats but I got bored not being able to use them in the way I had them set up and dumping several thousand into suspension/tires/wheels only to get to use them very limited times and we all know an HPDE weekend takes it's toll on brakes, tires, gas etc, especially pueblo hahaha. I also go tired of soccer moms in their Honda Odyssey's beating me

But anyway, I'll always be a road course guy at heart and still wouldn't mind coming out and pushing around the track for a while. Hopefully it doesn't end up burnt to a crisp like the silver turbo E36 that caught on fire out there last year LOL!

Have any pics? I always love me some track prepped E36

The weather this weekend

Well. Mother Nature must feel sorry for me. The revised forecast on weather.com for Byers is as follows:

Friday: Few Snow Showers. Flurries and a few snow showers throughout the day. High 37F. Winds ENE at 5-10 mph. Chance of snow 30%.

Saturday: Mostly Cloudy. Considerable cloudiness. Highs in the upper 40s and lows in the mid 20s.

All that said, I have no idea at this point what the track manager, Glenn, is thinking. But I haven't yet received the dreaded email that HPR is Closed Saturday...

llis, what do you think? {fingers-crossed}

2/26 Cancelled

It's official. Today's chill has put tomorrow's lapping day on ice. I'll be shooting for next Sunday, March 6th. Again, open invitation for anyone who'd care to join!

The 6th won't work for me, but later in the month, yes!

I know Hopefully you have plans for something else equally as fun!

All: I have also recently learned that the Cars lapping day this upcoming weekend is actually Saturday March 5th.

Bump to encourage sign-up at HPR for Saturday! The weather's looking good for the weekend, so the only way they'd cancel would be due to lack of sign-ups. They make their decision Friday's @ noon, so sign up today or first thing tomorrow morning if you want to head out there!

HPR's open tomorrow

I have confirmed HPR will be open tomorrow, they've received enough sign-ups.

I hope everyone had fun today. I'm waiting on tires from Tire Rack or I would have gone. There were a few people from the RMC BMWCCA forum who wrote they were going. ('Andy' in a black '88 e28 M5 whom I met at last year's BMWCCA Pueblo DS said he was going.) I'm hoping the weather will cooperate on March 18th. I'm up in the air with doing the NASA event on the 19th. (No idea if it's filled up already.)

Edit: BTW, looks like March is end of winter pricing.

It was a great day. A little on the chilly side, but nothing a little heated seat couldn't cure! We had a solid BMW contingent out: 2 E90 M3s, 2 E46 M3s, Andy's E28 M5 and at least 6 E36 M3s. The first couple of sessions were head scratchers ("where am I?" ... "where do I brake?"... "what's my name again?!?") But that's what lapping days are for. With only about 20 cars signed up, it was a nice way to ease back onto the track.

FYI, NASA has the weekend of 3/26-27 booked with HPR as a back-up in case the 19-20 weekend is snowed out.

It's on!

Well folks, this weekend looks to be gorgeous and the first NASA event of the 2011 season is a Go! I'll be busy 'playing' instructor Saturday so my E90 won't be out on the track. I do plan to be taking my new APEX ARC-8 / Koni Challenge Conti setup out Sunday tho. (fingers crossed that'll be in between instructing real, live students). Would love to meet you!

If not, we should try to coordinate a day out in the not too distant future...

Reviving a somewhat stale thread... llis and a friend (with a Z4!!) are likely going to meet my husband & I out at HPR this Saturday (April 2nd). It should be an interesting day in that they've combined the motorcycles and car lapping days together. (They will NOT be on the track at the same time - sessions will be 30 minutes long and switch back & forth for each group.) I find it fascinating to watch the bikes on the track... it's just so different from the cars!

FWIW, this is the last Saturday lapping day of the season - they'll all be on a Monday or Friday through the summer. That said, summer pricing starts this weekend ($90 for half-day, $150 for full-day)

Would be great to meet some additional folks out there!
