I'm a little (lot) OCD myself. I get a lot of pleasure out of detailing my car. I only use painter's tape when I take it to the track to protect the sideskirts. I've decided if I get too many rock chips on the front bumper I will just have it repainted.

If you were really into protecting the car you would have covered the whole damn thing in painters tape!

I now realize how amazing my fiance is in helping me do what we did to protect my <400 mile E90 M3. This is done with less than $14 worth of standard 3M painters tape 2" wide and 3 hours of detailed work. Have a look:

1. Side View - Some tape was falling off due to plastic areas that were not that conducive to adhesion. But we managed to cover all painted parts on the front third of the car, including the underside of the front bumper.

2. Passenger Side View Mirror - To Cover this, some of the tape had slits in them so that they could easily curve around the sections where a straight piece would not bend around.

3. Another Side View but Closer.

4. BMW so precious, i want to cover you - We took one long piece of tape and cut multliple slits into it so i could go around the BMW emblem.

5. Passenger Side Vent - I originally wanted to just quickly put some tape on, but my fiance refused to "slap" it on so we ended up trying to spend time covering only the painted areas.

6. Fat Front View - also note that we covered the A-Pillars including the first 7 inches of the front of the roof as well.

7. Close Up 2/3 View of Front Left of Car - We managed to tuck painters tape around places that were easily accessible hence the "full" coverage.

8. Left Hood Vent - Since this vent is in use, we decided to be detailed and use smaller pieces of tape with slits to go around the hard to cover curve of the vent.

Overall, I was happy with what we did. Just wanted to share my OCD-like behavior for those that might actually appreciate it. If anyone wants any tips, i'd be glad to give them some!

By the way, this was on for 2 weeks because my car is getting a clear bra on 2/3 of my car are Premier here in Socal. Finally I can drive it with very little worry!

I must say, that's an original solution.

Question: Why didn't you make arrangements to have the protective film fitted to your car before you picked it up? That is exactly what I have had done, and it isn't a big deal to coordinate between the dealership and the third party. BTW, since your car is painted, I think you should used the purple painter's tape. It's much friendlier to painted surfaces than that "BMW" blue tape you used.

I had a lot of fun peeling all that tape off. Don't worry Albert, I don't think you're OCD. And if anyone should get flamed, it's me, I recommended the OP doing this, and the results came out great.

Hey, it may seem excessive, but I recall reading a post just the other day about this guy who, on his way to get a clear bra, got a nice big rock chip on his front bumper. I got lucky driving around "unprotected" for 4 weeks, but it would just totally suck to have the clear bra planned and then get dinged up on the way to get the damn thing.

OP, yes, it's a bit OCD and excessive, but who the hell cares? It's your car, and, you didn't end up with rock chips before getting the work done.

On another front I'd recommend moving from "fiance" to "wife" pretty darn quick. If she's right in there helping you with this and not complaining about it then that's what we call a keeper my friend! My wife just rolls her eyes most of the time regarding what I'm up to with my car (she doesn't oppose most of it, but it's just not her "thing"). You're got someone there who gets you and accepts who you are, and who shares your passion for this car which is totally cool.

I did the same thing a while ago when transporting my car from PA to VA. I got a lot of grief from fellow members, but I would do the same thing all over again! Your execution is much cleaner and better than mine, A+

Well, i can see your point OP; however, i'd rather sleep at night. If i am going to worry about nicks and stuff, then i'd be much happier with the car parked and never driven.
Bills742 has a good point. If I am driving long distance, then I wouldn't mind taping up my car; protects against bugs and birdie poopie.

Mate, it is your car... the fact that you're willing to put the effort into protecting her... well done!

I thought of doing the same thing driving from Austin to Phoenix after taking delivery, but ultimately did not take the time to cover the front of the car. We did the drive straight through during the night, so we did not encounter as much traffic and less likely for chips. Luckily, we made the drive clean with no chips and then it was off to the 3M film installation.

I totally understand and can see why you would do this!

Standard 3M Painters tape you find at any hardware store. There is purple or less adhesive painters tape that might be better that others have suggested.

But here's a picture:
