Family blames keyless ignition for woman's death

Quote:
Orlando, Fla — Action 9 investigates a dangerous problem with cars that don't have traditional keys. Keyless and remote start features are now blamed for two deaths, one of those in Florida.
Action9's Todd Ulrich asked, "Did a keyless ignition system almost cost you your life?"
Tim Maddock said, "Yes."
His 29-year-old girlfriend, Chasity Glisson, lost her life after investigators said Chasity left her Lexus running in the garage of her Boca Raton townhouse.

Ulrich asked, "You never heard the car running?"
We went up and down the stairs twice and never heard it, Maddock said.
According to investigators, the carbon monoxide level in the bedrooms right above the garage was one and a half times higher than what is considered dangerous. Tim was hospitalized in intensive care for nearly a week. "From the very beginning, they said it was impossible that I was going to live," Maddock said.
He said he blames the ignition system where a key is replaced with an on and off button, a recent feature in more than 150 models from different manufacturers. It offers convenience, but critics say that without an automatic shutoff, an easy mistake can turn deadly.
"If the car shut off, she would be here today, and she would be fine," Maddock said.

I never understood how people could forget to shut off their cars. It seems like one of those things thats a given. Blaming the car for you inability to push a on/off button before getting out is ignorance on your part, not the automaker's.

Its unfortunate what happened, but PAYING ATTENTION could have easily prevented this.

Here comes the lawsuit. Which is ridiculous since engineers at Lexus could never had conceived of someone being so fucking stupid. Actually, some intern probably said something at a round table meeting and was laughed off by the engineers. Darwin applies here.

ARE YOU KIDDING!!!!! THIS MAKES ME SO MAD.... I just did it with my Moms IS 250 and the car freaked out when I left it on and shut the car door and walked away.

I did leave the door open and walk away is it did not make a noise. BUT you can tell the car is on. Even though its a Lexus its still loud enough to know its on. Plus if you closed the garage door its much louder.

I never understood the switch to keyless ignition, must be cheaper to make.

I've had problems with it in rental cars.

Lol at all the mention of it being a Lexus.

My BMW does the exact same thing.

Definitely tragic for the family, but still, ultimately the fault of the car's owner and nobody else.

Tragic....

*Note to manufacturers.....put on louder exhaust systems so people can tell if their car is still running when walking away. Why? Because the average buyer is getting more stupid each year.

That is all.

Stupid humans, our race is doomed

Dysgenics FTW! Good-looking, dumb people have more and more kids while smart, socially conscientious people have less and less.

Agreed. It would be just as easy to accidentally leave your keys in the car and leave it running. What an idiot.

Plus they make these safety things called carbon monoxide detectors....

While leaving the car on is pretty dumb, I'm more shocked that they didn't bother to put a carbon monoxide detector in their bedroom. It's only a few bucks people and it protects you from cars that were left on and, more likely, malfunctioning heaters.

That is so fucking stupid...the car will beep like hell, plus the sound of the engine being on. Sad he lost his girl, but at least she will not be able to bring children into this world.

Lawyers aren't to blame. It's the idiotic system they're taking advantage of.

I'd sue too. We see posts here all the time from people who walk outside one morning to find all their windows rolled down because their keys bumped up against something in the house overnight. This is the same thing. Remote start systems clearly have to have auto-off after 10-15 minutes. I'm amazed to hear that there's a remote start system out there that doesn't include this feature. Its manufacturer needs to be sued.
