Talking Service department UPDATED

I bought my car in March CPOed. In July it was down 1 quart of oil, so i took it to the dealer. They performed annual low mileage yearly maintenance. In January I am down 1 quart again.

I decide to track the mileage between oil warnings, so I bring up my invoice from July.

I see what you see above and now I am sick. I obviously never looked at that before. Is there some slim chance that they always say that even though they really put 10w-60 in?

If they really put 10w-30 in... they are going to have to buy it back...

Have them check the part #. If they messed up, it's their responsibility to fix it, not yours. You have clear documentation that it is their fault. If you're really worried, take it to an indy shop and have them take an oil sample. It might cost you a bit, but it would bring peace of mind.

Also, you should censor out your phone #, email ID and VIN # from that attached picture - not a great idea to let that information circulate on the internet, IMO.

Thanks for the heads up, didn't notice that stuff was on there. I was definitely going to do an oil analysis... I think that is the only way i'll know for sure. (I wouldn't admit it if I was them.)

Honestly, it's probably not going to make a huge difference. Definitely worth talking about before you go back there, though!

I think something is not cosier here, perhaps the wrong computer selection was made here when they prepared your invoice.

It can happen easily most of that stuff is selected from "drop down lists" on there invoicing systems and it can easily happen. So I would check with them and ask for a corrected invoice or even go as far and demand a oil sample to be taken. Anyway that is what I would do.

My greatest concern would be the word "DIESEL" when the invoice states Oil 5W30 DIESEL

If they did put 5w30 it could explain why it's burning oil, but a couple quarts a year really isn't a big deal. If you're really scared, make them change the oil again and be specific about 10w60. It's a CPO car, it's probably had much worse done to it before. Enhance your calm, John Spartan.

I would be pretty pissed, I always go over my invoices before I sign or leave. I would have the analysis done, anyone can say it was a typo. The cost would be the peace of mind. You could also see if the dealer would cover any of the tests cost.

Indicate the dealership name here, so your local forum peeps avoid going there.

I'd at least give them a chance to determine if it was in fact that oil. My 1200 mile invoice listed the wrong oil, but in my case they had the actual print out from when they drew the oil, and it was in fact correct.

It's not a typo. The parts advisor keyed in the incorrect part number but I am pretty sure the tech put in the correct 10w-60 oil. The part number on the invoice is for a 335d, the tech would have caught it if he was given that oil.

I am the parts manager at a couple dealerships(unfortunately not BMW) and I don't want to say it happens all the time, but it happens.

Take a oil sample and if it is Diesel Oil than let the dealer know and ask them to fix it. If you have the right oil then just leave it alone.

If they start telling you that you're wrong and that you have the right oil in your car, talk to the service manager and the owner of the dealership. If they don't make it right then call a lawyer.

Like what's already been posted, take the time to get the oil sample. Peace of mind is priceless.

I got a voice mail from the service manager stating it was a clerical error. He asked me to call him back to "discuss our options" which leads me to believe he is willing to prove it to me.

I called back and got voice mail... I left a message stating that an oil analysis during the next oil change should be a reasonable request.

I will post his response.

Good and wise call on your behalf, if he is in doubt he will offer you a oil and filter change right now.

Are you thinking about internal damage if the incorrect oil was used during the service call?
