Long-term tire storage - Tire degradation

I'll be storing tires in my garage, and won't be using them for perhaps a year or two. I've read that the tires should be bagged in an air-tight bag to help slow down degradation. Is this necessary if the tires will be used within 2 years?

It's better to wrapt them up. Just go to any tire shop and ask for some bags. They all have them; they're like big trash bags.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Store the tires vertical in air-tight plastic bags, these bags you can buy at your local tire specialist and in these conditions it's ok for 7 years .

Thank you. I currently have the tires stored on a tire rack. Will pick up the bags later on today!

Tires stored out of the sun and in a garage that doesn't see freezing temperatures should last a long time.

Though manufacturers recommend changing after 6, I have experienced that summer tires can work fine after 8-9 years (original Michelin Pilot Sports from my E46 M3). I even ran a set of Toyo R888 R-compounds a few months ago at the track with a date code of 2008 on my Spec Miata (times were about a second off new ones).

As a habit though, I generally try to change tires after 4-5 years max even if they have good tread since I like to optimize performance

Best to swap your tires with some used tires. It depends on the environment the car is left in, but 2 years will take a toll on the rubber maybe even permanently flat spot them.

I have my tires stored on a hanging tire rack. Will flat spotting still occur?

Regarding the 8-9 year storage time, is that assuming the tires are bagged up?

My extra tires are stacked in a garage in the CA SF Bay Area (no freezing temps, not bagged).

How do you manage to have a set of tires for 4-5 years?

I go through mine almost like underwear.
