I've had a Porsche fund for a while and am currently leasing a 550i 6MT which has been the best car I've owned. I'm 36 with 2 kids so it made alot of sense. Anyways, I used the Porsche money for the GTR which is great for what it is but it's not a daily driver and I just can't get myself to leave it with parking attendants, movie theaters etc. My lease on my 550i is coming up and there is no new 5 just yet, so i figured i'd get an M3 with the good lease deals out now.
As I mentioned earlier, the DSG is great for going fast but clicking the little bar behind the steering wheel is eerily similar to the Logitech controller for the playstation. There is a little click sound when you shift up and down gears but isn't the same as grabbing the shifter engaging a clutch and slotting through the gears. A good analogy would be how digital SLR cameras mimic analog cameras with their weight, feel of the buttons and controls and even have the shutter sound which we all know is totally unecessary in terms of performance. People just need the feel. One day, hopefully, manumatics will have that "feel" |

I don't know why we keep coming back to these mindless threads.
The two cars drive differently because of the transmission, though the end result is the same, they are both bloody quick. This is the second DCT car I have owned and it's the best to date. Sure I miss the manual from time to time, but as soon as I hit heavy traffic the reasons and advantages of DCT clear my mind like a bomb has just gone off in my head, the ease of driving without that clutch pedal in these occasions is brilliant. Also there is some satisfaction from the speed the shifts are completed (still prefer S2~3 to the higher modes) but there is no substitute for a proper manual when you are really on it, regardless of what anyone says. I love both but for different reasons. |

6MT is more fun and complicated
DCT is faster and easier End of story.

I have a 330ci 5mt, at the beginning, though it was a little misforgiving, but now, me and the car are just like one unit.
Test drove the Porsche 911 Carrera S 6mt, very nice. Short throws, nice clutch. Test drove Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK: I will NEVER get use to the awkward push/pull buttons and reverse/anti gravity (push upshift/pull down shift) stick Test drove M3 6mt: I am sorry for saying this, but it felt kind of "agricultural" (having said that, I am sure I would get use to it just as I did with the 330) Test drove the M3 with DCT: Suddenly, I am a hero, an F1 pro, every shift is perfect, down shift on command, always in the perfect gear, really cool. So took the plunge and here I am with the DCT. Since nobody wants to give me what the 330 is worth, I have a mt car to satisfy my manual transmission thirst. In the end, I like both. Gerhard Berger was interviewed once and asked why he drives an automatic Audi. He's response, "you need to pay me in order to drive a manual transmission car" Interesting!! Before this, I though I rather be dead than caught on an non manual transmission car. Here I am now with the DCT. test drive both, only you can answer the question. |
