Minor accident & CarFax/history reporting?

I recently had someone back into my parked vehicle. The front bumper and grills will need to be replaced due to gouges/dents/scratches.

The guy owned up to it and wanted me to get an estimate so he could figure out if he wanted to pay out of pocket or turn it over to his insurance. It came in right under $1250 and unfortunately he turned it over to his insurance.

So my concern is whether or not this will show up on a Carfax report and if so, how much detail it will go in as to not scare off any potential buyers down the road.

Anyone familiar with this?

Our Durango was hit in the rear at about 10-15 MPH and required about $1,500 in repairs (new bumper, bumper cover and paint.) Basically just cosmetic type issues. I was surprised to see it listed in Carfax as an accident. I don't know if it was the police report or the insurance claim that triggered the Carfax.

When we traded it in, most places were dropping their offers by $500 because of it. So while we did get the entire cost of repairs covered by the responsible party's insurance, it still cost us $500 in diminished value....

Yeah, wasn't sure if the trigger was the insurance filing, police report, body shop responsibility, etc.

Insurance claim triggers it.

Damnit. Is there any information shown as far as severity, whether it was just limited to body work, etc?

The best thing you can do at this point is probably to take pictures of the damage, save the repair estimates and invoices, and be upfront with a buyer about exactly what it was... and have the documentation to prove it.
