AD08 or PSS?
I've decided to try and sell my 20s and get a supercharger, so that means I'm going back to ZCP wheels. I'm going to keep the KW Sleeve kit, so I decided I'm not going to try and squeeze 265/295 combo. I'm going to stick with the tried and true 255/35/19 and 275/35/19. I may also try some MS spacers with 10mm front/5mm rear. All this being said, I've always loved the look of the AD08s, but I'm wondering how much I would suffer from the lack of wet traction later in the life cycle. I live in Central FL where we have daily massive downpours. Also, I'm guessing I'll get 5,000+ more miles out of the PSS. So here is my assessment, please help me with it.
Yokohama AD08 Pros: Wider. I've considered a 265/295 combo, but I think these would be a nice compromise due to the extra tread width. Better Looking. I think these are hands down the best looking tires on the market with their squared-off side walls and cool tread pattern. Cons: Wear. 180 AA A tread wear rating means changing tires more often. Wet Traction. I've read these are nasty pretty early in the rain. That being said, I don't drive this car in the rain often. Price. These cost more, don't last as long, and don't work well in the rain...I'm already know what I should do, but I just love the look of these. Michelin PSS Pros: Lighter. These weigh considerably less (4 lb. each front/2 lb each rear=12 lb. difference!) Cheaper. These cost $118 less. Wear. Directly opposite of AD08 con. Cons: Look. Although not terrible looking, in my opinion, these don't look as nice. It seems clear that I need to buy the PSS, but those Yoko look so darn . |

ad08s arent as good as the pss in the rain like you said but not that bad either and give much better dry traction.

For reference, I have 10k miles and probably 50+ 60-70 second autox runs on my AD08's (275/30f, 295/30r) and they still have a significant amount of life in them, surprisingly.
I'm a Yoko fan for performance and they are not horrible in the rain. I also wouldn't intentionally try to push any tire when it's wet out, on the street anyway. |

My rc-3 are horrible in the rain. Very unpredictable. Switching to pss for daily was the best move I've done in regards to confidence on the road. Great wet traction. Not so bad for dry traction. And smother Nd quiter all around tire.

Ive had both and the grip on the PSS is pretty amazing once its a bit worn in but on the limit they don't behave as well as the AD08s. The AD08 is very impressive especially at the limit and the wet weather performance is about as good as it gets. I had no problems pushing the car on the track during minimal hail/rain at Buttonwillow last year.

If it's for the street, just get the PSS.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I've used both on track and street cars. MPSS is better on the street and Yokos are better on the track, but only marginally so. You really can't go wrong either way. MPSS has the mileage warranty if that is important to you.

I say go for the ad08 the tires are very close in performance and the price does not justify that

On my previous M, I had AD08s and loved them. In fact, by comparison the PSSs I have now are something of a disappointment and I'm thinking I made a mistake getting them. In the dry, I think the AD08s are great. I like their firmer ride and stiffer cornering as well. With PSSs, my car now feels almust mushy by comparison.
When I first got the AD08s, my break-in drive was 8 hours of country roads to the track in Hastings, NE, where we had a rainy NASA weekend. The AD08s were great in the wet. In fact, I was thinking of getting them as rain tires for my racecar this year. Is this helpful info? |

This is great info. I was pretty sold on the idea that PSS were much more practical, but now I'm going with the AD08s. Thanks all! |

Sorry to highjack the thread a little (seems AD08 is most perferred for track)...how about if we threw the Direzza ZII in the mix and compared it to the AD08?

I switched from the PSS, which I really liked all around, to the AD08. Aside from the added confidence cornering with the AD08s, I can actually got WOT throttle in 1st gear again, and they hold.

ad08 of course, not only they are stickier on dry roads, they also have better cornering, thanks to those stiff sidewalls :P

This post has had me thinking since I replied. Lately I've been coming to the conclusion that I made a mistake going with PSS rather than AD08s for my current car. The Michelins just feel mushy by comparison, even in stiffest EDC setting. I anticipated this somewhat when I made my initial decision, and as my current car is not destined for track events, I figured it was the right trade-off. But now I'm missing the AD08s even driving around town. I may need to bite the bullet and switch.

I am certainly glad I asked this question, as it seemed very clear that PSS was the answer. I just wanted someone to talk me into the AD08s. It looks like they are a superior tire. I have a sale pending on my 20's, so the AD08s will be on the way in a week or so.
