Quick question about M3 tach - why do only some have the shift lights?
Browsing around an e90 M3s and noticed that only some have the sequential yellow shift lights on the top curve of the tach (see pic below). What year/option/etc is it, causing some to have it and others not?
Thanks |

Yes we MT fellows don't need any lights ... we use the red line on the Tach

Yes, shift lights are useless and for bad drivers. Thats why F1 cars don't have it, they have manual gearboxes and a plain tach ;-)

To be honest I am a total amateur road driver and I really find those shift lights useless. If you are in full WOT mode, the revs rise so quickly and your attention is on the road that watching the lights and changing based on that is almost impossible and not desired. I just have learned to to it by sound which I am sure an F1 driver with SO much experience does very easily. I can tell just when to shift and I know I am pretty accurate because every so often I will not shift early enough and fuel cutoff happens JUST when I was about to shift so I know I am usually pretty spot on.
Not even sure why I bother having the shift lights "on" but still gets me excited to see when they light up I know the revs and WOT are on! |

Even when driving manual, I just do my best to feel the car and shift when necessary. MT/DCT... Same shit. Feeling the car doesn't change |

Don't take this wrong, but you have no clue. Where do you think the technology for DCT came from? F1....No human can shift faster than DCT.

Nascar does have Tachs and they light up too, they don't have speedometers... You can also use the shift lights without taking your eyes from the road, if you use your peripheral vision. They're bright as hell....

Agree. During regular driving I shift with engine sound usually around 5K. But with spirited drive I shift with yellow light for 1st 2nd and on red light for the rest. All without looking at all
