Le Mans (dream) Project
During the weekend, I was talking to a friend of mine who used to work for the Oreca racing team...and I started dreaming about being member of a team that would enter a car to the mythical 24 hours of Le Mans someday!!
I am now wondering if we have enough talents on this forum to get the thing going (no dreams are too big IMO!). So besides the fact that getting one of the 55 invites for the ACO (organizers) will not be an easy thing (except if we enter the ALMS first or because the M3 is not as common as a Vette or a Ferrari), let' s get the ball rolling. We will need (please add as you read this):
What do you think guys?? Do we have the relevant talents available on this forum to pull it off someday??? Let' s get the thing rolling!!

A acquaintence of mine put together the 1st Viper team that ran at Lemans in the mid 90's and to see what is involved in putting an effort like this is mind blowing.Their shop was 5 minutes from my house and I was privy to a lot of the inside goings on.They had factory support and even at that time,it was well out of the scope of a medium size pro team as I witnessed personally. This was a group that had won a couple of high level Pro open wheel Championships. |

I can be a driver, I'm not bad and I'm learning racing
This past year in actual French Le Mans we sponsored Patrick Dempsy Racing with @SportsTV and SeeliveSurgery.com as well as The Premier Basketball League all on board as sponsors. He raced for Team Seattle for Charity in F430 prepared by advanced engineering. No big finish but heres some of the support functions out of the way Heres a pic of the dad lol |

Its all about having the right people doing the right thing.... as in paying the right people to do the right thing.... then.. GOOD drivers.... To many resources are wasted with awesome teams, engineers, car... and the owner drives it around and crashes it...

So let me get this straight - you have a "dream" project and you want to be the team director? Shame on you - return your M3 at once - you should want to be one of the drivers!!

I hear you.... I REALLY wish I would have the necessary driving capabilities right now... but sadly, this is not (yet) the case!! I will be working on that, but in the meantime, I feel that my organizational skills are comparably better! Probably also not yet sufficient...but better and I can improve quick. I will keep dreaming for a while... in BRIGHT COLORS!! I will update the list as we proceed, but don't hesitate to send your suggestions....

All you need is money to make it happen! There is no shortage of talent available in this area.A lot of the people that I know around here have won major North American Championships in either a crew position or driving.I was seriously putting together a Grand-Am cup drive in ST with the current championship leading team.I had $50000 of sponsorship together but I needed a lot more to do the whole season at $8500usd per weekend and all the other personal & traveling expenses.I know that $75000usd was the price for a ride in one of TRG's 911's for the 24 at Daytona. To think I won a Canadian Pro Championship in 1990 for under $50000!

I realize that I was low (after checking my notes)in the money required to do Koni ST(Grand am).The $8500/weekend was to do the Canadian Touring car series and the Koni was $11000 weekend. Both of these were to arrive & drive. |

I agree, the most important is probably money... well at least to get the project going! Of course talent is available but the more famous that talent is... the more money! (see Mr Dempsey...).
So how much would a budget for a weekend at Circuit de la Sarthe be? Probably close to 600k - 900k?!?! (including the car)

Nice thread, U have to dream big to accomplish big....That being said, im down to help out as a mechanic. Im a certified BMW tech. Also like most have said, the key thing would b the money needed to race. I know people who have full race teams and they seem to always go in n out of racing, not by choice but because it gets very expensive. They also use mainly jap. cars because parts/motors are cheaper and easier to come by.
