BTW: I am glad they did put a longer 7th in the car. No need for the car to be buzzy on the highway.

So 7th in the MDCT = 3.154, and 6th on the manual = 3.354

Thanks for the info.

+1

It's funny how new technology is not adopted universally. I love new transmission technology, but I refuse to use a PDA - I still write stuff down on little bits of paper.

To each his own. I understand why some people will always love a manual transmission.

MDCT all the way for me though.

"Manual" phones enable the user to feel so much more "connected" to the person they are calling though...
DCT is sounding suddenly quite tempting, actually. Maybe in an E93 next year...

I've testdriven Golf R32 with DSG long time ago. I hardly remember the gearbox other than the gearchanges were much smoother than SMG in automatic mode and downshifts felt slower than SMG.

Gosh I really want M-DCT. I was told that I wont be able to get it and I didn't want to wait till next year to drive the M3. I think I want to wait, but hopefully since I'm at number 19 it will be available for me to order. I sure do hope cause M-DCT is looking more and more like a must have option.

No problem.

I won't beat you up about it like some others might. Your comments about the SMG felt like it changed quicker may be true (up to a point) because I also felt that when you flick the left paddle there is a very slight (very) delay between that and the gear changing, the actual shift is done at lighting speed but I feel that the bit prior to this was slower than I would have liked.

Could this be what you were meaning?

Is that across the board or just for Germany?

man bmw is making its cars WAY too complicated. 11 settings just for the transmission?! i can already foresee complaints by car reviewers.

i am sure technically it will be awsome, but do we really need such a complicated man/machine interface? that's a bit too much IMO

DCT operation

How did SMG (and will DCT, presumably) deal with low speed stop and go traffic. In Auto will it shift into neutral when you come to a stop? How about in Manual mode?

Is there any place I can read up on the technical aspects of gear ratios, etc? I've always been interested in that type of stuff but never understood it extremely well. How does a longer 7th help with the buzz, for example.

My dealer called me and just got off the phone with him in Indianapolis. He stated that the US is taking orders for the M-DCT with production starting early as March through May. Initially there will be a very limited production. The price will be $2700. He went ahead and cancelled my previous production number my for a new allocation spot with the M-DCT with new projected production in March. I had the number one spot with a production number and was already in status 111 with production in the last week in January. Definately feel that my dealer is telling me the truth and hooray that the M-DCT is coming and I'm able to get one. I'll keep you posted when I get a new production number with the M-DCT.
