Just did this one..via Ebay as well for $120 shipped and I am happy; the M Logo is also lit. thanks to this sticky DIY I was able to gain the confidence to do this myself.
I now realize what you guys say about being "weighted"; I felt it in every shift; going into and out of gear. Also I had to do the clutch spring removal. (btw I did notice that the clutch pedal moves side to side with little play after the removal; doesnt bother me but thought it was unusual.)

Looks great. Did you guys change the overlay or is the knob now available on ebay with the M logo lit up? And what is the ring base for the boot? Sorry for the noob questions.

I reused my stock one - used a little silicone sealant around the edge to hold in.

Are you talking about the ring or the overlay?

The shift pattern inlay. One that came with the knob did not have illuminated M.

Re
If you can mange to remove the shift emblem from original ZHP knob, it can be used to be made as illuminated, just by making space under and inserting the LEDs. So it does not come illuminated but it illuminates if you put a light source behind.

I was talking about the one on ebay that everyone is talking about, that comes illuminated except for the M logo. Although, some said that they got theirs with the M logo illuminated. So was wondering what the situation was now.

Thanks. But what is the ring in the shift boot that some people talk about? If I buy a new boot from LeatherZ, do i need one with the ring? In the DIY where we cut our boot, I don't see the use of any ring.

After reading this thread I'm am thoroughly convinced that I am going to do this mod.I am also extremely confused. From what i am gathering the LeatherZ knob is too expensive, correct? Would it be better to get the knob off ebay? There seems to be conflicting opinions on this. Also if i go with the regular 6 speed pattern without the M emblem on the know would i be able to pop it off the stock knob and then just glue it on to the zhp knob?

Thanks OP!
Great DIY. I don't think I would have attempted this upgrade without the help. Very easy to do if you follow the instructions, which I did.
I went with the EBay version. It's a bit brighter and redder than the OEM version. The shifts are much better! |

hmmmm, the original boot and wired connector should be evident. The one you're showing in the picture doesn't look like it. Also, you're giving too little info. on where you are in the process and which path you chose to get a ZHP Lighted Knob.

I wanted to bump this thread because I have been asked a few times by owners how to install the BMW Performance shiftknob and BMW M-Sport shiftknob onto our E9X M3.
This is basically the same way...minus the wiring...

This completely saved me as i botched my boot from the f10 m5's shift knob, so i ended up having to do it this way and can't be more happy. Thanks!

Judging by the pictures, I think keeping the original boot on the F10 knob results in a slightly cleaner installation. It seems like the gap between the metal and the leather is just a tiny bit more noticeable with the zip tie method than it is if the boot is left alone. Maybe I'm just seeing things though, it's hard to judge from the pics and both methods seem to have nearly perfect results. I have my F10 knob sitting around waiting to be installed...still haven't decided whether to use the E92 boot/zip tie method or the F10 boot/cut holes method.
