Speaking of lasts, an E93 M3 also won't be the last naturally aspirated BMW when it rolls of the line later this year - which is sort of too bad since it would have been nice to see the S65 get that honor. But the N43 and N52 will still be used a bit longer in the E82/E88, and the N53 is still hanging around in the 530i and 730i in some markets. |

So now the N54 is only good for speeds up to 45mph before it dies?

Way too low. A quick survey of the used car market will show that most of the cars out there are DCT. Probably as high as 80-90%.

Dear S65, e.g., one of the best production V8s ever made. Your redline, power band & visceral soundtrack was amazing and unprecedented. At some point, this car will be as sought after as the E30 M3.
It's the kind of engine we'll be telling our [grand]kids about one day. |

I think the last one goes into the museum. So the question is more who got the 2nd to last one.

You never know. For now I would expect them to stick with the Z4 awhile. Frankly if they are allowed to use the Z4 with the V8 indefinitely, it would make sense to keep using that car now and into its next generation. Why go back to the larger body and passenger compartment if the sanctioning body does not force you to?

For what I paid for my 328i I could have purchased a clean used E92 M3. The problem is I drive a LOT and I cant afford the 8-11 MPG the M3 gets vs the 23 MPG I'm averaging in my 328i. If the new M can achieve 18 MPG+ then of course I rather have an M3! The new Porsche 991 Turbo makes 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque and gets 29 MPG (on the European cycle) with a 3.8 liter 6. THAT is awesome! I think BMW can do much better than the outgoing super thirsty V8. |

Very happy to get my 1 of < 10,000 last year! If anyone has the ability to track down the info, I'd also like to know the 6MT/DCT numbers, and also how many of each body style were sold in the U.S. (or North America). Would be cool to know that mine's one of 2500 in the States!

How about taking them for rides in it?! Love the thought of keeping this car, and keeping it running, that long...

But if I were buying a performance coupe in this class today a C63 507 would be the one. And with everything turbocharged next generation, I definitely have both the W205 C AMG and B9 RS5 on the short list. M4 and M2 are certainly there too though. |

That doesn't change the truth about my statement. With every new iteration of M3 there was something to complain about. The introduction of the E9X was no different. Everybody lambasted the E9X in 2008; 6 years later it's all peace, love & hair grease including the obligatory statements about it being "the last true M car" (..just like with every other M3 before it). |

It certainly is the end of an era for the m3 in how the power plant and delivery of power has been conceptualized from the beginning as this being a track able car with a linear power delivery up to the high-revvs. It delivers power in a way that is so instant, linear and enjoyable that its an entirely different experience.
The number of cylinders is a silly argument to make for people from the folks saying the I 6 was the last of the m3 cars. Its the WAY in which an engine makes power and delivers response. I6 or V8 can both do it and have done it very well. The turbo puts an entirely different spin on power delivery, no more ITB instant response (and yes those that have driven both know there is a CLEAR delay in response from any of the modern n55/n54 or V8 TT cars. Compared to other big v8's they do stack up very well but not at all to the M cars with NA engines. THe response is night and day. So I am a fan of new technology but I will miss the end of the high revving linear delivery of a race bred concept. I will be moving on to a gt3 for this type of car and enjoy the new m4 for a different purpose (how people enjoy their 335i's today). But nonetheless end of an era for sure |
