I had a good time. Unlimited Motoring is a rather impressive place with a bunch of cool cars being worked on. It is also immaculately clean...

Exhaust looks and sounds good Tomasz! I really enjoyed our lunch as well.

Cheers,

I see that rather than using a heat shield, you wrapped the pipes. Was that your idea? Looks good.

Hi:

I wrapped the pipes because I procrastinated so long that I had to go with the local O'Reilly solution. They had DEI wrap in stock.

But I also saw the GT4 pipes wrapped and concluded that if BMW does it - it can not be so bad.

On a sadder note, I have not driven the car since the install.

why not? ice? .. I've been driving my m3 around even though its still on PS2s (Dunlop wintersports ordered but not here yet) - and its been fine. I've been very light on the throttle and stayed off side streets .. no drama.

No, just took the family to Leavenworth for new years. Left Friday, and just got home couple hours ago...

I believe the theory is that you insulate the exhaust pipes to keep the exhaust gas from loosing heat.. The hotter the gas, the faster the gas exits the system. More rapid exhaust gas exit translates into more power. I suspect that is why the GT4 pipes are fully wrapped.

It seems to me that the sections of pipe under the wrap will get hotter than the rest of the exhaust. Whether that's an issue or not is unclear. But that was a concern to me.
That's why I went with the shield: It doesn't trap the heat, it only blocks the heat and limits the rubber components and differential from getting too hot.

I believe it is similar to insulating steam pipes. The goal is to trap the heat in the pipe to minimize heat loss. The insulation is cool compared to the contents of the pipe. This gets the heat where you want it. The radiator for the steam, the exhaust tips for the car. I suspect wrapping (some use powder/ceramic coating to do this) is equal to or more efficient than the shield. I have nothing to back this up though.
