long story short, the incident has been logged in your car's computer and a full detailed report has been submitted to BMWNA, by the time you finish reading this your warranty will be void. Expect a letter from them by Monday.
Just messing with you on the latter half, but your car's computer would have recorded this for audit in case BMW needs to follow through on a major warranty claim. |

It was decelerating, Not like you were WOT at redline. It's actually good to softly take it up there and do a deceleration to help seat the rings. Totally fine!

the car should be fine......from the outside. Inside the engine is a guaranteed total mess. Solution: send it over to me in Cali and I'll babysit it back to health Hey man, that's what forum friends are for right? It's ok.....no need to thank me....no need to thank me..

i think OP didn't know the car shifts down for you when slowing down and right after it already downshifted for him, he hit the down paddle. since DCT knows next shift down would not cause engine rpm to be higher than redline it allowed the downshift. End result is an unintentional downshift 2 gears lower instead of 1. given the type of speed he was going, it could easily rev up to near redline, not over it.
still, no problems regardless. in all honesty I think the break in period exists only to ensure the various components of the car aren't shocked increasing the likelihood of premature failure meaning it saves the manufacturer money and you time wasted at the dealership. The factory rep said that a certain percentage of production engines are tested for quality control which means they have to rev them to redline multiple times. Running in engines even modern ones involve scoring the cylinder walls with the pistons. I'm a firm believer in breaking in an engine the way you intend to drive it normally. Since this particular engine is inside a sports car, guess where that rev range involves. Of all the guidelines BMW has on break in, I think the most important is preventing driveline shock. you need to break everything in, not just the engine. The brakes need to be bedded in properly. The differential also has to wear in. The engine should not be revved high until the oil temp is nominal. No stomping on any pedal, no speed shifting, everything smooth. Actually smooth is fastest anyways so there should never be a reason to be abrupt with any vehicle controls.

BMW will be at your house within 24 hours to reposess your car due to your carelessness.
J/p I dont think it will kill your car if you did it once. Now doing it everyday throughout break in might be another problem... |

When I bought my 08 I did not follow the break-in at all, drove it as I would drive it in real life. Put 30K on it in two years with no issues and no use of oil between changes.
I think the break in is for newbies who are not used to having a fast car to help them learn about it before they put it into a tree the first week they get one ........Steve

Yes, that's the lesson: more important for longevity of the engine to warm up the fluids etc.

To clear things up. I was slowing down in 4th. Downshifted to what I thought was third but I was actually in either 1st. Pushed the gas, and in third it takes quite a while to hit 5.5k revs but in 1st its really quick. Thinking I was in 3rd because I've never driven DCT before, I wasn't expecting to shift until I see yellow lights as the car is approaching redline.
The car was driven for about an hour prior to the incident so the fluids were all warm. Only time will tell if my s65 will last as long as the ones that were babied. Fingers crossed |
