OEM Windshield replacement

Just wondering how many people here have replaced their M3 windshield before. Did you end up going back to the dealer for the OEM glass or did you go to a local glass shop for aftermarket?

If so, how good is the aftermarket stuff compared to the OEM Pilkington Glass?

Dealer is about 4 x more than the ordinary aftermarket windshield which is probably made in China from what I've been told.

Thanks

Just got a crack on my windshield last night (darn i295). Dealership quoted me $1285 for replacement and labor!! WTF?
Dealership or not, I do know I am getting an OEM windshield because I know for a fact aftermarket stuff is crap.

I just had mine replaced with an oem screen. It looks like it's never been touched.

I had a friend who had an aftermarket screen in his e46 and it needed extra goo around the bottom corners to get it to seal.

Paying a $500 insurance deductible seems to be the way to go instead of this ridiculous number above!

What's the situation in the USA when you crack a windshield? Do you have to pay the full cost?

In the UK our car insurance includes windshield cover, but we have to pay the first £60 towards getting it done.

I paid $1200 at the dealer for a new windshield. $500 deductible means my insurance paid roughly $700. There are other threads on this subject ...

I had mine replaced on a Mercedes with a MON OEM and I will NEVER do that again. The quality differences are night and day.

Took a rock that put a small crack in the windshield. However, here in AZ the heat can cause any glass crack to rapidly expand. Went to my local Safelite shop and they inserted some kind of resin that filled the crack and made it look like a pin-point or dot on the windshield
If they had to replace it, I got them to confirm they would use only OEM BMW glass from the dealership, not a knock-off replacement. My ins co (USAA) OK'd my request and there would be $0 deductible (at least for AZ). Luckily the resin fix worked perfectly.

I had the windshield replaced in my 2006 E90. I used the glass guy that my dealership uses but I called him directly (I had used him before) and he came to my office and replaced the windshield with a new OEM Pilkington one. I watched him do it. I don't remember the exact cost because I claimed that one on insurance but it was around $500 I believe, maybe just a bit more, and that was with the rain sensor and the new strip of rubber trim that's needed. I know it wasn't more than $600 because that's what BMW charges at lease-end (I had to pay that too when I turned that car in because windshield #2 got cracked as well...damn Houston)! Maybe it's a little more now because this was in 2007, but I think if you're paying $1200 then you're getting hosed.

In 2005, I had the windshield in my E46 replaced, also with an OEM Pilkington one, and it was even less. Under $400 if I recall correctly. The guy was telling me that windshield replacements cost a bit more on the E9xs because of the way the rain sensor is, as well as the additional piece of rubber trim that is required.

I had a rock crack my windshield when the M3 was less than 2 weeks old. Always put in OEM glass, especially on a car like the M3, even more so due to the rain sensor. Aftermarket glass is a crapshoot as it may be thinner or the rain sensor may not function properly. The windshield on modern cars also play a major role in the structural rigidity of the car. I would definitely suggest you get OEM glass and even more important make sure the person that installs it is experienced with working on BMWs.

Aftermarket companies can get the OEM glass. I haven't done mine in several years - used to be like $250 comprehensive deductible on my insurance.

actually in my past experience, other brands of windshields are much better than OEM. I think OEM uses Pilkington. I heard the best glass windshields are made by PPG.

The parts alone (at retail) for the M3 are over $700. No one is going to get an OEM windshield installed for $500.

Agreed, the worst replacement glass I have had was Pilkington on my E36 M3- it was just horrible. I think the OEM glass that goes to the repair shops are factory rejects...

As far as cost, last year the replacement glass on my E46 M3 was $245 installed, compared to the first time I replaced it which was $900+. Both were factory OEM glass, both independent shops. I've found that on all our cars the cost for windshield glass replacement has dropped greater than 50%.

This is why I am glad I have $0 deductible for comprehensive. I dont have to pay anything out of pocket for a windshield replacement. It even makes more sense for our new X5 that has HUD since the windshield is actually part of the HUD system and cost a lot more than the normal windshield.

My '08 OEM is Saint-Gobain, a top French glass company.

Pretty interesting...the quotes on this thread are about $1200 for a replacement OEM windshield. My dealership quoted my ~$1900 for everything...and that was supposedly at a discounted price for labor. $1900...freaking crazy!

The SA also told me that going with a non-OEM windshield would mean that the sensor for the automatic windshield wipers wouldn't work anymore. Sounded like BS...can anyone prove or deny this?

Any other problems going with a non-OEM replacement other than maybe a bad fit (as mentioned above)?

The OEM replacements could be rejects from the factory. In my experience that seems to be the case. When I put a non OEM replacement in, like PPG the glass fit perfectly and there was no distortion. With the OEM glass there was some very severe distortion.

And yes the rain sensor is BS. Most shops are experienced in replacing them now.

Irvine BMW? Either way that price is outrageous. Talk about greedy stealers...

My deductible for a badly sand pitted winshield was $100. I think the bill the mobile installers sent to my insurance co. was about $1,000.

This OEM glass sucks and that has been discussed prior on the forum as well. My E36 M3 had a better looking windshield at 150k miles than this one did at 15k.

Got mine done by Autoglass in the UK -cost £75 (rest covered by insurance). Not sure why people think the dealer would do a better job. Autoglass fit screens all day every day so they get pretty good at doing it. How many do the BMW stealers fit? Anyway, no problems whatsoever with mine. Too early to say whether it resists the chipping any better than the BMW glass although so far I have no sign of any chips.
