SPAM PMs asking about recent purchase?

It seems like we have more spammers on the board. I'm sure some of you have received a similar message.

see this thread also... http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...=1#post3872944

The following is a PM I received from user: SnowKing (mods: please ban)

rickc,

I saw on m3post that you just bought a 2008 M3. I was about to buy one and just saw this press release that they’re raising prices across the board:
http://www.bimmerfile.com/2008/12/23...s-for-january/

What was your sense of the climate when you were negotiating, are the lots soft? Do you think I can get one at or below invoice, do you think BMW is really setting the prices?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I am confused...

How exactly would this constitute the moniker of 'spam'? It's far too well-written to have been composed by a bot; which is where most spam comes from.

Yeah, was gonna say it just sounds like the guy is looking for some first hand input/advice on purchasing a car. What seems to be the issue?

Here is how I loosely define SPAM:
SPAM = junk mail sent to numerous individuals

I don't care whether it was sent via BOT or copy/pasted to multiple members, regardless.. it is SPAM to me. Had no idea this would result in a technical conversation about computer terms.

so if i ask advice from several members
i am spamming?
i did the same before i bought my m3
asked about 5 or 6 people who had recently purchased about how low they got the pricing
and thanks to them i got my M3 1K below invoice

leave the banning to the admins

Not for nothing I asked several people here and elsewhere for info on recent M3 purchases, I asked several people so that I had different input. I pick my car up tomorrow and to the people that I was in contact with I thanked.
Glad I did not ask you. Jeez lighten up a bit.

And just to be sure- SnowKing is NOT affiliated with Bfile at all so that should not even be in question, there is Gabe and myself and both of us have far better things to do than that.

Heck I have not even had time to do anything but this ///M3 acquisition.

Wow, you guys really missed the point here... maybe you didn't click the link I posted in the original post.. I just thought it was strange he asked different members about the M3, 328, and 335 AND posted on other message boards AND never responded to the 2 or so long paragraphs of advice I gave him on the matter, not even a simple "thanks."

Just thought it was a little weird, nothing wrong with asking for advice as long as it's genuine.

Now I see...

...initially I had responded to your post from my iPhone so, I didn't follow the links. Now that I am back in the office, I have followed the links you provided and now agree that it is odd. The format for each PM is almost identical as is the verbiage. It could be that a user has some kind of worm that is replicating itself and sending PM's. The thing about that that scares me is that the alias used for PM's should be obfuscated (hidden) by default and never exposed outside of the user who is signed in - it's all supposed to be session-based. Of course, I don't know how PHP handles session variables since I am an ASP.NET/C# guy.

And after having re-read what I just posted, I am obviously a mega nerd too.

I received the two PMs like that and I answered them like any other PM asking for advice... now, if he/she starts asking for my credit card or for lottery winnings in Nigeria next then the crap will hit the fan for sure.

I did not follow the link as I was killing time at the DMV on the trusty iPhone... it does appear to be a bit strange and is worth looking into further. My apologies...

At Bfile we get hit with spam posts quite regularly but akismet handles most of them otherwise I delete them on the fly; it is so annoying.

+1

As a web/application developer I couldn't agree more! I presume you have filters in place at Bfiles? If I may ask, do you also use velocity checks as well?
