Does it really matter?
Recently there have been lots of threads about performance comparisons, especially with Audi. Personally, I don't care if the M3 will be 0.1s slower or faster than an RS4. I buy a car because I like the looks and I like driving it, not because of some theoretical performance figures.
The M3 will be fast. And it will be fun to track it as well. That's all I need to know. Anyone else tired of "Will it be faster than my neighbor's Xyz?" ? |

But, wait, we didn't even start the "Will it be faster than the RS5 discussion?" Well, we are kicking the idea around on the other thread, but I wouldn't call that a proper start really...

Yes, M cars are all about driving experience.
Of course RS4 is "more fun to drive on daily basis" - since it is glued to the road due Quattro AWD system. But the essence of M cars is driving involvement. Hard work when driving. Constant shifting. Oversteer on the limit. Sensual experience. BMW M will never become more clinical then AMG or RS4. Perhaps AMG & RS models will "drive better" but regarding driver involvement & "Freude am Fahren" feeling M will still remain unbeatable. |

I think the "theoretical" performance comparisons are being done because those are the facts at the moment. Since few people here have actually driven the car, it kind of makes it hard to talk about how fast it really is, or how fun it is to track. Since BMW includes the Porsche, Audi, and Mercedes in their own brochures for the M3 as comparison, is it unreasonable that people would look at the same cars?
But then again, you already know (how, I can't imagine) the M3 will be fast and fun to track. So instead of complaining about the people doing "theoretical" performance comparisons, why don't you start a theoretical thread on how fast and fun to track it is. Oh, but that would be silly at this point... |

I haven't driven it myself but I have talked to one of the test drivers at the Nurburgring. Maybe his opinion is biased, but at least he knows what he is talking about... |

If you compared these 2 cars on looks alone the m3 would win hands down. The Audi with the 4 little doors and that ridiculous grill! These cars obviously have very similar performance but one clearly stands out as a great looking car.

Sure, for 5% of all M3 drivers, who can actually drive to the limits and experience a well-balanced chassis. The remaining 95% just want to believe in the M-essence. They will never truly experience it.

No way I don't agree with that. When I am drifting through my neighborhood at 100mph+ I want to be able to hold my drift +0.1s longer than the RS4.

when to wait for kills the dreams:-)
Unluky for all us...waiting for this car....the only thing to do is to wait for better, much better and closer reports, based on numbers, rilevations of datas, and track times...Numbers will kill or will save our dreams..
At the moment we have nothing on our hands...only reports. If this car like it seems will be under the 8.10 minutes at the Ring in Germany it will be much faster than probably we will need ..(for the most of us).So one second faster, or one second slower...it will be not so definitive. It is like with women...I think...You need to see her into the eyes and after one second you will feel something. At the moment we sew the RS4...We need to touch, to see, to admire the new m3 by person, and so all the numbers will pass in second position... |

Couldn't agree with the RS4 grill comment more. I know it sounds like a small thing to be hung up on, but it looks so hideous--enough to keep me away for sure! What were they thinking? It looks good from the back though...Regardless, the M3 looks better overall.

Agreed, it really doesn't matter which one is faster. Both are fast and comparable and good cars, each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

It goes both ways. The new M3 looks great overall, but the front bumper kinda sucks. Of course thats just my opinion. But I'd love to see a M5-like bumper on the m3.
