I'm a little confused by this discussion. As I understand it,
1) Octane rating refers to how much the a/f mixture can be compressed before it detonates, making higher octane necessary for higher-compression engines; and
2) Ethanol has less energy per unit volume than gasoline.

So, it seems to me that we should be getting more power from 91 with no ethanol than 94 with, unless the 91 is tripping our knock sensors, thereby reducing the power we get to the wheels.

Can someone school me?

Thanks
Bill

Wow, you guys are mileage champs. I get 9.3 MPG, around 25l/100km, barely 200 KM per tank.

I do most if not all of my driving in downtown Toronto at rush hour though.

WoW! I got around 450 to 480km per tank. Thats a mixed of highway and city driving. And its winter driving too because I think it burns more gas for turning on the heat.

I have always run Shell V-Power and I am about to get a VSS tune with the higher octane rating so i will be switching to Petro 94 for this. Does anyone know if Shell intends to come out with a 94 octane in Canada in the near future?

I have owned this car for about 1000km and I have been getting 14.4l/100km with mixed driving and I am new to the car so testing the performance... 360-380 out of 55 liters...

Since I got my M3 last July I've been using Ultra 94. Should I switch to Shell V-Power 91?
