Downshift to 3rd grind?

I test drove a 09 6MT and noticed some grind (1 to 2 clicks) going from 5th to 3rd, speed was around 30mph while slowing down at a red light. Happened only one time during a 15 min drive, local and highway. Btw, car has around 30k miles.

Is the occasional grind fairly common? I'm sure the dealer will say it's normal.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the input gents. Sounds like new is the way to go, especially in a 6MT.

Anyone else with grinding 3rd?

I just shot my service director a call and asked a couple of our SA as well and no issues with anyone regarding grinding gears so far. We service a ton of M's.

Bad synchros..definitly not normal usually indicates trans was abused or incorrectly shifted..if it is the synchros...it will require an entire new trans..b/c BMW in their brilliance sells no internal trans parts for the e9x..

This has happened perhaps 2 times during the life of my car (original owner). It's really rare, and I'm usually rushing the shift (the 1-2 grind is way more common) during more spirited down shifting. Unfortunately, I'd be wary of a car that did this on an easy test drive.

I would stay away from this one. There are plenty of used out there to shop from.

35k miles here. No grind. Walk away or have them replace the trans.

Thanks again for all the input. It's great to hear the 6MT are reliable. I'll move on to another E90 6MT. Lmk if you have one for sale in Nor Cal. Cheers!
