Time to move on from the E92 328i and get a 4-door sedan, my wife says. I don't particularly like any of the ones on the market right now.

If you were to say I will die in 6 months, what car would I get? I usually ask myself this question every time the idea of buying a car comes up.

I want the E90 M3. In an ideal world, that's what I would drive.

OK, so coming to my rather naiive question. I am neither mechanically inclined nor excessively endowed financially. The last car I bought, I went the CPO route from BMW. But it looks like they don't CPO cars as old as 2011.

So, are there any options for warranty if I get a 2011 M3 from a non-BMW dealer? Are those options good and seamless if something breaks? Or would they involve getting into slow, cumbersome paperwork and back and forth emails before a claim would be honored?

Also, how reliable are these cars generally, would it be trouble free for say another 6 years (the car would be in its 13th year and around 100k miles by then)?

The cars are generally very reliable, couple of known weak points (throttle actuators, air conditioning evaporator) but otherwise you are set. Buy the best condition you can afford, off the right owner, with a car that has been well maintained.

They are not cheap cars to run though, particularly if you are doing a lot of miles. They drink gas, mods have an M tax, consumables are more expensive (tyres, brakes etc). However for the money nothing else compares, E9x M3's really are the sweet spot right now.

I see 10 E90 M3's listed (6 2011's), but none of them are certified. I love this site, found both my current BMW's here, but it's not exclusive to just CPO cars, despite the name of the page.

Even if you found a 2011 E90 M3 with CPO, I would think it's on the verge of expiration at this point.

There are lots of warranty options out there. I would probably pursue these on your own, and not purchase one through a dealer if that's where you end up buying from. Unless you read all the fine print and are comfortable w/ the warranty they are selling.

These are proving to be reliable cars as they age, that's why I haven't bought a warranty. With that said, I did recently purchase a 3rd party warranty on my X5, a much scarier BMW to own out of warranty IMO. I found a good warranty thru a recommendation on this site. So yes, lots of options if you want to go that route...

Iam in the minority here but after getting burned on a out of warranty C63 i vowed to never own a german sports car without a warranty. Everyones situation is different but for me the extra cost of the warranty made sense.

Lots of aftermarket warranty's out there mine cost me $3800 its a 5 year / 100K 0 deductible
although my car is a 13 and had 30K when i got it... for a 2011 it might be a bit harder to get a warranty thats not priced thru the roof.I dunno

Put the cash you would spend on a warranty into a high-yield (but still accessible) account of some type, and vow to never touch it except for serious repair needs.
