Extremely Limited Availability of 2015 Helmets?

Anyone else running into this or noticing this, or good insights on online stores with good availability. Have a 2005 that expired, and finding that availability of at least the cheaper helmets, such a Bell, are very limited or non-existent. My wife, whose been trying to help me track down one, said our local shop has nothing available, and may not have anything until June. Another place she found only has availability in white, no black. Since the 2015s have been out since late last year, I hadn't been paying that much attention, but looks like I should have. Luckily, I have no events coming up real soon. Any organizers extending the deadline for using 2005s for this reason? Don't get me wrong, there's definitely some availability, just surprised how tight the market is for these right now, or maybe it's just always like this the first year after an expiration, I obviously haven't bought one in 10 years.

Thanks -- yes, they do seem to have some availability, and interestingly enough, that's where I was leaning. Incidentally, has anyone found a good comparison site for bell helmets? Even there own website doesn't do that great of a job delineating the differences between all the somewhat similar helmets between the $400 - $600 range.

Article in SportsCar mag said that pent up demand is outstripping supply on SA2015 helmets. Good news is they say the carbon fiber helmets are coming way down in price.

Yeah, if you are happy with a helmet that only lasts 5 years, you can get a good deal.

I thought you were supposed to replace your helmet every 5 years anyhow.

One day at the track costs more than a 2010 helmet, tbh.

I think supply is a problem in Canada. One of the local BMW clubs will be allowing 2005 helmets for 2016 it's such a problem...

After 3 years, my 2010 either needed new cheek pads or to be retired. I cannot imagine wearing one longer than 5 years if you use it a lot. I'll probably put new cheek pads in my 2010 to keep as a spare or for friends that come for thrill rides.

No, you can if you want to, or use it a lot, but pretty much all clubs I've run with allow 2 generations (with a generation every 5 years), so a 2015 will be allowed through 2025. I've happily used my 2005 for 10 years, though admittedly I'm the 3-4 event a year person. Someone running 10-15 a year might well want to replace after 5 years, and so for that, a gen old helmet might be fine.

Anyway, any good recommendations on the bell line in the 400 - 600ish range? As I mentioned, Bell doesn't do a great job of differentiating. Thinking the M.8 @$500, but open to recommendations. Appreciate the suggestions so far, and some of the feedback does suggest I'm not alone in my thinking

I too am waiting on a new Bell helmet. They moved their production facility to a new country (Bahrain) and are still getting caught up. Northstar Motorsports has estimated late April or early May for it but each time I ask it seems to get pushed out by a month.

Leo is correct -- most bodies are granting SA2005 an extra year. Northstar also mentioned this.

PCA policy will only grandfather until June 1, 2016.

Good to know. I have mine ordered from Apex, they are estimating May/June. Right now I have nothing planned until July, so that should be fine, though I have been eyeing something in late June.

Not sure who (or when) you heard April/May from Northstar, but when my wife emailed them about a week ago, they told her June.

An update I just got for anyone interested. My helmet, which I ordered 3/29 to make sure I secured a spot in the backorder line, is not expected to start shipping until 6/20, with another ~2 months to completely clear the backorder log (meaning I good chance I won't see my helmet until July or August at the latest. The $3500 HP7 is shipping now though , as well as the $279 open face Sport Mag helmet

Yep, the dates seem to be holding steady on my M.8 for a July delivery.

It's just beyond frustrating how all of the manufacturers dropped the ball on this. Northstar explained to a group of us that when Bell started moving their production equipment to Bahrain, the Chinese government held it up at the port...probably out of spite. They lost a few months because of that cock-up.
