Back on the Block

Tomorrow I make my return back into the M family, I am picking up my 2011 M3 in the morning. I am giving up the 2009 GTR. I have owned an E39 M5, E60 (Dinan-mod) M5, Z06, (2) Mercedes E55 (1) Mercedes CL55 porsche GT3 and a custom 911s. I love cars, but now I need to slow down a bit (getting close to retirement). Good to be back...going to keep it simple (not!)

Welcome home. I want to hear your impressions after having the GTR.

Cheers.

That's quite a list of cars.

Options, style (sedan, coupe, vert) and transmission choice?

Picked it up today!!

Picked up a 2011 M3 Space Gray ZCP, ZTP, premium package, enhanced sound (the works). I had the rims powdered coated black and I am putting a Dinan exhaust (black tips) on next week. Car runs and sounds good and has a host of technology enhancements, I will be putting it through its paces in the coming weeks after the break in period is up. Fox red leathers interior with carbon black trim.....I like!

I know what you mean. I've done a lot of track time the last 8 years, beginning with an E46 M3, then a ZO6, and a GT3. All were a lot of fun, but I think I'm going to quit the track stuff, as retirement is now in sight. I've been very fortunate to avoid any damage to car or person, and I want to end it that way. Just bought a 2011 M3 coupe, no options except comp package and DCT. The latter is something I never thought I would buy, but after test driving a few, I like it, and it's easier for the wife. And frankly, after the GT3, the BMW clutch and shifter are not very enjoyable. I believed years ago that an M3 is very hard to beat as an all around high performance street car, and I've owned nothing to make me change my mind.

Perhaps he could have described his reasoning a little differently - I would say that the M3 is just as capable of very high performance as those other cars but is much better as a comfortable and practical touring car or daily driver than the GTR he was driving. The E36, E46, and E9X M3s have all shared that admirable quality of great performance and everyday practicality. The only thing that really bothered me about mine was the poor fuel mileage combined with the smallish gas tank meant frequent fuel stops.

In my case, in a word, yes. The qualities that make the ZO6 and GT3 so satisfying on track, are of little pleasure on the street. The M3 offers the obvious utility of a trunk and rear seat, plus good ride quality, and is sufficiently quiet that you can carry on a conversation or listen to music. Track time in the other cars made me a better driver. And the M3 is so balanced and forgiving in its handling that, in comparison, it can be boring at times, but that's the trade-off for such a great general purpose car.

Oh I understood what you were saying, I just don't think I've ever heard anyone say it before. I wasn't questioning your decision or anything, it just gave me a giggle is all.

To answer a question; carbon fiber roof, DCT, coupe, Space Gray, fox red interior. Yes it may sound a bit funny in terms of slowing down a bit, but what I really mean is that I wanted to slow down a bit on the car purchases and settle on a vehicle that would have a little bit of everything. The corvette and the porsche were very specific cars. I almost forgot to add the Audi S5 that I had as well. I was pleasantly surprised with the level of detail in the M3. The S5 does have a pretty nice interior, but the M3 is nice without being over the top. The sound of that engine is great. I have a 1957 (modded) Chevy pickup truck with a crate engine, headers, free flow exhaust and yes push button starter. Great sound; the M3 is the civil version of that sound....just right. When you hit the M-button and punch the gas the car really comes alive. Good to be back on the block......

Yeah it does suck the gas for sure. I went out today for a quick spin and noticed it right away. Not a problem though based on the upside....

I never got used to the interior or that very wide dash and those very long doors... and the bucket seats were most frustrating since you had to use a power button to move them forward to get people into the back... whereas the e46 coupe front seats actually move up off the floor (brilliant design) giving passengers an easy in and out and the operator a 2-second job. Waiting for those damn seats to move ever so slowly back and forth to allow big-foot into the back seat was ridiculous. Anyway, I do love my e90 M3, but it's gotten as fat as it can and I'm only going to assume the next gen will even be fatter. BMWs have gotten HUGE! My wife won't even consider a 5-series anymore because they are humungous and the new F10 is a giant block of lightly carved cheese. I'm disappointed in BMWs direction. Design is fine... but size is too big for my comfort. Go sit in that 5-er GT... OMG... what a freakin' PIG. Another thing is that these new BMWs are so overly complex that the thought of owning one out of warranty downright scares me. I'd rather go back to simple... and free from Skynet.
