Dealer recommends Throttle Body and Fuel Injection Cleaning at 16500 miles???
Dear all:
Brought my car to the dealership to check on steering wheel rattling sound which has been bugging me for months. Dealer was able to locate the problem but the parts won't get shipped until Tuesday so they are keeping my car over the weekend. I am guessing that they took down the steering wheel parts so that's why they wanted to keep my car at their shop so it was no bigge (and plus I commute like crazy so I can use a loaner for better fuel economy ). Anyway by the end of that car, the SA was like, "hey your throttle body and fuel injection need to be cleaned. I have a coupon for you to save about $100". According to him it's dirty enough to get cleaned, but my questions are: 1) I've had this car for 1.2 years with 16500 miles. Is it already time to do cleaning on throttle body and fuel injection? 2) Can I trust my dealer to clean those parts? Will they mess it up more??? Please share your thoughts... Thank you! |

Coupon for a 100...my @$$. Tell him your BMW came with 4 year/50,000 mile maintenance and he needs to preform the cleaning for free.
Well see if your car still needs it then...its a bunch of BULLSHIT, the car does not need that!! You should report your service advisor to BMWNA |

If the car needed it inside warranty, it would be covered. Shady. Have him put it in writing. Watch him run.

Guys:
Thanks for the reply. Thanks to my idiotic and naive self, I said yes to the fuel injection cleaning but held on to the throttle body. FYI, I called BMWNA and according to my customer rep, it is likely caused by low quality oil (not in terms of octane). Perhaps sometimes I pumped gas in when the oil tankers refilled caused dirtiness. Oh wells, what's done is done. Lesson learned, but won't let it ruin my weekend Thank you all for your replies! Have a great weekend!!! |

Is it possible to even know that without doing some digging? Thought they were just looking at the steering column...
Is this Peter Pan, btw? |

My 3rd BMW and after 7 years on BMW forums, this is the first I've ever heard of this.
1. If this really needs to be done, it should be done under warranty, however, I've never heard of it needing to be done on a newer vehicle. 2. How did they know this needed to be done? Sounds like BS to me. Plus leading with the whole "Hey, it's your lucky day, we have a special going right now, with this coupon you get $100 off". That's just dealership snake oil. |

This is total BS......in fact my Cooper S went in for a CEL a couple of months ago. Problem was dirty injectors. They hinted that maybe it was some dirty gas. I say bullshit....I've been getting gas at the same station for over 6 years. I've never had a issue with any of my other BMW's. Turns out this SA was a noob. The issue is a common issue on some turbo set ups. This was all covered by the nice warranty we pay for in that MSRP price. Get your money back. You'll through a light if the problem is that bad..................Phil
