Anyone make the switch from an E60 M5 to E9X M3?

Just curious how you feel about the switch

Currently trying to sell my M5 in hopes of buying a M3. Hope I'm not making a mistake, I think I might miss the V10!

you'll miss the sound. and the V10 is pretty serious grunt on the freeway.
i miss the soft closing doors and the active side bolsters the most tho.

The M5 has spoiled me with its Heads Up Display....

I had both a e46 M3 and the M5 at a point in time. I must say, I miss the e46 a lot because of its nimbleness, etc. But I love the M5 for its brute force, creature comforts, and highway cruising.

Really depends on what you want out of a car. A nimble car (m3) or a autobahn monster (m5).

Things I miss about the M5: The brut acceleration., HUD, soft close doors, the roominess, the sheer presence, real seats in the back, did I mention the brut acceleration?
Things I love about the M3: the V8 groul (the V10 was too muted), it's tossability, the updated idrive, its looks, DCT (the SMGII was crap), better interior ergonomics.
In the end you're talking about 7 year old technology versus today's. If you're OK with less power, and 2 less usable seats, then the M3 is awesome.

Take a M3 for a nice long drive then decide ... I hear the 1M is very nice ... if you can find one to test drive I doubt it.

If we had the Autobahn in North America I'll drive a M5, as it is I rent one when I go to Germany

Thanks for the feedback guys.

My M5 does not have active seats, soft close doors, or HUD I'm really not into those options. The HUD is cool but to be honest I know the car so well I really never need to look at the tach, I can just tell when the car is at redline by the sound/feel.

I'm looking at buying an M3 with some extensive mods to it, it's making nearly 500WHP on a mustang dyno, however it is not DCT it's a 6spd, not sure how I feel about that.

I can drive stick very well however I can not shift faster than a computer.

I'm a younger guy, not married and I have no kids. I can pretty much count the times I've had people in the back seat over the past 2 years of ownership.

My M5 is not a daily driver and the M3 would not be either.

Basically, I want something faster than my M5 and I believe a 500WHP M3 that weighs considerably less should probably blow the doors off of my M5.

I know stock for stock the M5 really puts a beating on the M3. My car has every RPI bolt on except for headers. The car pulls very hard on the highway, I'm door to door with a stock GTR and lose to a 2011 GTR by about 3-4 cars.

I guess my main concern is that the M3 will not be much faster than my M5, although I don't see how it would not be - that thought is still in the back of my mind.

I assume its a supercharged m3 your looking at? I would get into a porsche if you want a faster car. If you buy a supercharged m3 you have no warranty. I would rather put that money into a 996 turbo

If you have the financial resources, i suggest you go with Porsche Turbo. Carrera S has the same pull with stock M3, M5 has a much stronger pull so you need to step into Porsche Turbo category. Maybe give a shot on Grantourismo S if you prefer looks to performance.

I had a 335 before my m5. I too was on the fence about going from m5 to m3. I almost did it. But then I thought about room for the kids and kept it.I say go for the Porsche. Nothing like a little bit of change all together.

Dont think there are many 996s with a warranty left. The 996 looks so dated inside and for the price of m3 theres no way I can touch a 997.

I'd be more concerned about getting killed on the resale value for the M5. For such a epic car, I see them going for a lot less than I would expect...

I went from an E63 M6 to an E92 M3. I miss the straight line speed and personality of the S85, but you get it back in the corners. I must say I love the SMGIII out of the E60/63, but I guess I'm unique. That S6 'thunk' and neck jerking shift is missed...

Don't do it. Go ask the e90post forums if they'd rather have the m3 or m5
Guarantee most will say keep the E60.
Also if you are worried about the m5 not being "as good" when the new one comes to the states, keep in mind the next m3 will follow in 2-3 years tops too.

Wow I would not drive that if he paid me 68k. Track only car than sure but I would be embarrased to drive around on a daily basis in that thing. And at 68 k for an 08? Even though there are lots of mods, in no way do those mods make up the 30k difference between other 08's out there and this. You can pick up an 08 for 40k or less. So the price is also ridiculous.

Buy a brand new m3 for that price with a warranty if you really want an m3.

Now if the price was in the 50k range than it would be worth looking at

Is that a serious question?

Heck yes I'd take the M5 over that. Such a heavily modded car has less value in my opinion.

If you want a supercharged M3 then go get yourself a stock 08 and do your own mods. That one is way over the top. A wing like that and roll cage look silly on a street car.

I owned my E60 M5 for almost 3 years. The options I miss the most is the amazing sound the engine output at WOT, HUD, side bolsters, suede headliner and my daughter misses the heated rear seats and 4 doors.

Having said all that making the switch to may E92 M3 I couldn't be happier. I've owned 11 BMW's over the past 12 years (always 2 at a time) and this M3 has been the best all round fit for me EVER !

Take the plunge you won't be disapointed! You might think going from an M5 to an M3 is a step back however it's been said that M5 owners would have bought an M3 if they didn't need the big 4 door saloon.

You'd be amazed how much room there is in the back seat (as well as head room for those who don't opt for a sunroof) and the trunk is plenty large enough too.

The engine note is very aggressive just not quite as much as the M5.

Good luck with your decision.

huh??......a 996 Turbo is a great car but you do not get a warranty there either. Plus, you will be getting a dated car...that will need to be modified as well to keep up with a SC M3.

997TT is a different story but it sounds like the guy likes M's.

Please show me an 08 with 18k miles for 40k or less.

If i did buy that m3 the wing and roll cage would be removed, also my m5 is not my daily driver.
