Extended Warranty - Not Transferable?
Hey folks,
I wasn't sure where to put this other than "General". Here's the deal. Bought my 2009 Coupe from Carmax last summer, had 18,800 miles, looks AMAZING! Jet Black w/ Black Leather, DCT, etc... Had my service dealership print out the report on my car showing sticker price, all options. Normal Maintenance agreement, expired 12/22/2012, did not extend. Had the 72 month / 100,000 mile Warranty. <--is this not transferable to new owner??? Plastic "nut head", one of two on my engine cover was found broken off rattling around in the recess where it lives. I showed my service advisor and asked about it. I didn't know what they would do, because it appeared that I could have broken it off myself... Long story short, they decided to cover it under the warranty. Cool. Ordered the part, called me a week or two later to install it. (this was November '12) Get there at 7:30am on the day, but Service Advisor comes to me very embarrassed, the parts were nowhere to be found. No big deal, he says "I will call you when they get here, so sorry, etc..." I'm pretty laid back, no big deal. Thanksgiving and Christmas happen, I finally am about to check with my guy in January to see what's up, when out of the blue he calls me, says, Parts are here, make an appointment and we'll get it replaced!! I'm about to drop it off this morning at 7:30am, but get a call at 7:00am from the receptionist saying, "Don't come in, there's some issue, Service rep will contact you today." Service Rep calls me and says, "We've got a problem, we can't replace the engine cover because it's no longer under Warranty." I'm a pretty laid back guy, so I chuckle and say, "Now Jeremy, that's just silly talk. First of all, I have an extended warranty on this car, but let's put that issue aside and say "No extended warranty"... I brought it in BEFORE the normal warranty would have expired and YOU didn't have the part, and YOU said you would call me when it came in." Rep says, "Yes, I remember all of that, but there's no way to cover it under warranty since it has expired. But let me see what I can do first, I will call you as soon as possible with more information." Anyway, this leads me to a question posed in the title of this thread... Are the extended Warranties not transferable to new owners? Thanks, Xomby |

By 72 month, 100k mile I assume you mean that the car is BMW certified pre-owned.
If yes, that's transferable. Bought my old M5 CPO'd and had numerous items covered. By the way, even if that wasn't the case they should cover it considering the issue was documented pre-expiration of the original warranty. Sounds like you've got a shitty service advisor.

If it is a BMW extended warranty, yes, it stays with the car and should be good. If it is a third party warranty, the person who purchased the warranty usually has to have it transferred to the new owner. You'd have to get a copy of the warranty to get the details but in the case of a third party warranty you would have something like 60 days to formally write to the covering company and make the transfer.
So bottom line is... It depends! Find out the details from your SA but you may be screwed. If the original owner sold the car to Carmax then its likely he/she did not transfer the third party warranty at that point but that is just me speculating. Edit: And FormulaMMM is correct, you brought the car in while still covered by the original new car warranty. Just because the dealer couldn't get the part until after the warranty expired, that is their fault, not yours. The dealer should honor the new car warranty in this case...

Yes it is. The extended warranty and maintenance programs through BMW directly (not 3rd party) stay with the vehicle. It's printed clearly on the back of the documentation that's presented during signing.

I just traded my x5 for which I Had purchased the BMW extended warranty. They told me it is only transferable if I sold the car to another person. It is not transferable if the car went back through/to the BMW dealer through a trade and then resold on their lot.
My x5 was a 2007. It had 7 months and up to 40k of additional miles left on the warranty so I thought that would be a reason to get more for my trade as that would be peace of mind to the new buyer. And that's what they gave me.....so I cashed out the remainder of the warranty and am awaiting some $. |

^^ Interesting. I am considering extended warranties as I approach three years of ownership. I always thought the BMW warranty was tied to the VIN and it did not matter who owned the vehicle. Better do some more research though I have to say I am leaning toward a third party warranty such as the USAA coverage.

True, does cut out the middle man! But I have plenty of time to make my decision...

M3
I just bought my 08 m3 from a Benz dealer, then took it to my BMW dealer and bought their third party warranty which is a pensky dealer and a pensky warranty for as least amount of hassle possible when the time comes that I need it.
As opposed to buying the 3rd party warranty from the Benz guys. Hopefully was the right decision. |

extended warranty will transfer over only if the previous owner signs the paperwork and authorize BMW to transfer it to you. extended maintenance will transferred over automatically (may need to call BMWNA to ask them to change)

If it's BMW warranty then you must register and do a transfer over to your name, a small amount of fee is requires.

On your engine cover if they somehow got the dates messed up you should ask for a "goodwill" accomodation. What is odd about the "extended warranty" you note is that you bought this car from Carmax in 2012 so it is possible it was CPO'ed but that seems odd. Even if the dealer resold it between 09 and 12 and it ended up at Carmax it is very expensive to do a CPO on an M3 and it requires a full and complete record of all required service from a BMW dealer. If it is not CPOed the warranty you have is likely a Carmax extended warranty.
