eBay description is misleading and not mentioning the real extent of the damage. Nothing about needing a new engine and makes it sounds like it was in a minor accident.

The paint, body work and used engine had to cost at least 15k, so I suspect 29k is the break-even point. Question would be is the smashed car worth more for parts at a $13,200 purchase price?

Just to clarify Limited edition as in there are only a few people who would actually bother taking a totalled M and putting it back together and even fewer people dumb enough to drop 30k on it.

No way I would buy that. I mean, great job on the repair but that thing was mangled...
I have a rule of thumb... Any frame or suspension damage and I immediately pass.

I would think parts would exceed $13,200. Transmission, rear differential, suspension parts, rear quarter panels, interior, etc, etc,...

That's what is supposed to happen with a salvage car... it gets parted out by a junkyard for a profit and the carcass is shredded up and recycled. Rebuilding them is wrong as it endangers the new owner and the rest of us on the road with a car that does not meet safety standards.

I rebuilt my M3, it wasn't major damage but enough that the insurance didn't want to fix. It was no where near what this is, maybe like 1/20th of that damage.
Also the safety isn't really compromised on all salvage cars, Mine is a salvage and I'm pretty sure it would pass all the safety standards. I will most likely never sell this car since it was a father/son project so I don't have to worry about resale. |
