BMW Car Magazine: E92 News Story

From a short news article in BMW Car magazine:

As well as the 335i engine details posted by 0700700 (rumoured 3litre twin turbo, VANOS & Valvetronic with ~330hp) the article makes menion of the rumours that SMG is to be replaced by a VW DSG style twin-clutch gearshift.

The article further states that the Coupe will have night vision and head-up display as options. Given that the 335i details and SMG replacement are presented as rumour and this is not, they must have some better info on these details, or are not being careful with their words.

Launch date is still a mystery, but they expect (the UK at least) to have the 325i 330i/d and 335i/d at launch, with 320i/d models to follow later, in both SE and M Sport trim.

The bad news is that there is expected to be a significant price hike to make room for a 1-series coupe.

Well if they do go that direction, you would lose the ‘on the fly’ gear ratio options that you have with the SMG, BUT you would gain a much better transmission that is not only smoother, but much faster as well.

Unless I'm misinterpreting you, I think you're thinking of a CVT unit...the DSG gearbox is essentially a manual box with fixed gear ratios, but two clutches (one for even numbered gears, one for odd) that can engage and disengage simultaneously to provide a seamless, uninterrupted stream of power to the wheels (much as a torque converter-based automatic does).

No, I was thinking of the DSG, which is a lot more than simply a manual car with two clutches. As well, they come in 6 gears or more (at least the VW / Audi / Bentley / Bugatti variations).

The M would most likely have more than 400HP to acheive more than 100HP/Litre displacement.
