I obviously don't drive 40 miles over in an urban area, especially on Grand Central Parkway in NY... for those of you who don't know, it is a highway with twists and turns and people driving like maniacs, not to mention the Cab drivers and in the middle of it all, traffic is so horrible all the time, I am not sure how long you can maintain going 40 over.

Instant on laser, once they paint your front plate (if you're unlucky enough to live in a place that makes you put on those eye-sores) and your laser detector goes off, you're toast, so coasting or hammering the brakes in that "less than a second" ain't going to do sh!t for you. Sorry to say, your brain your foot your braking system won't save your wallet or your driving record.
If u dont have a front plate can they still get u with laser?

a lawyer wont really be able to do much in this circumstance IMO

You were going 40 MPH above the speed limit, you admitted you went over 40 MPH above speed limit. There is no uncertainty here.

I wish California would just let us get away with no front plate

Yup, get a lawyer. It will be worth it in this case. You can expect to spend 750+ dollars for a lawyer to deal with this.

I got pulled over monday for going 85 on a 65 because I passed a blue VW going 65-70 in the fast lane. He told me I was tailgating because I was not seven car lengths away. Apparently for every 10mi you are traveling you have to be one car length away. But he didnt give me a ticket because he had an emergency. Shit I was lucky.

One's brain is better than a radar/laser detector. Just pay attention. Look for brake lights in the distance (everyone brakes when the see a cop). Look for clumps of cars (tend to build up around cop cars). Looks for spots cops would hide on straightaways and long highway turns. Follow other speeders at a good distance. It's pretty damn easy to speed responsibly and not get a ticket. Been doing it for almost 20 years without a detector and no tickets. I give a thumb up when I pass cops running speed traps.

You know what. I was gonna stay out of this. I don't support excessive speeding on the streets however, if you have an advice or suggestion that's cool but inflammatory remarks like this is completely unconstructive. Here is few other ways to get your point across:
-I support the jail punishment for excessive speeding
-Does OP knows that such speeding can get him in jail (BTW I didn't know that when I came from my country 15 years ago)
-I believe after 30miles above speed limit people get thrown in jail

NYC-based attorney here:

I neither do this sort of work nor know someone who does, but I agree that you should absolutely meet with an attorney, at least for an initial consultation. My feeling is that the only issue at play is the number of points that you may or may not receive; if you are facing a license suspension, be prepared to discuss the importance of the car as it relates to your livelihood: e.g. "without my license, I'll lose my job!" Of course, this must be true, so don't fabricate - these judges aren't stupid. Anyway, a traffic attorney will be able to help you navigate these waters. If you get the impression that you are up shit's creek with or without him (which is usually the case in these very basic matters), then don't retain him and handle yourself.

On a personal note, I can say that I've attempted to "lawyer" some of my own parking tickets / red light tickets (they love to ambush you at confusing intersections, etc. in the city) with little to no avail. It's no secret that the state is broke, I wouldn't expect a lot of monetary-based leniency for Mr. "BMW 2011 M3" - so be prepared to pay. The issue is whether or not you can negotiate a reduction in total points.

Good luck, and try to be mindful of what you do or do not admit to in the public blogosphere

I don't live in a fairy tale world. I'm a realist. When you're in the police academy learning how/why speed kills. You have a new prospective on many different things. He's old enough to drive, he's more than old enough to suffer the consequences and penalties. Again, I will repeat it. You should have went to jail.

I am a doctor and I see lung cancer almost on daily bases because of smoking, does this mean I go around telling smokers harshly that they'll get cancer and die??
They are old enough to realize that right?
How about drinking alcohol and liver cirrhosis? if I see you drinking, how would I know if that's your first and last drink Vs drinking a pint of vodka every day, I don't know! Should I warn everyone with a beer in their hand of cirrhosis?
All I'm saying is "Try not to personalize the message" it gets the point across better than having a defensive recipient. Well that’s my opinion; you may see it differently which is fine with me. Take it easy

would you expect to go to jail if you were speeding at the same rate? do you expect special treatment because you're a police officer?

looking at your sig and seeing your cars and bikes, I can't imagine you obey the speed limits 100% of the time.

Good thing we have laws to protect people from officers with short fuses and who like to take things in to their own hands as if they are the law.

Officers do get special treatments. Their wifes and GF's, family members, pets, etc etc.. dont get to go to jail when they get pulled over even for drinking and driving.

The law is very clear. People don't want to suffer penalties and consequences when they break them. It's the discretion of the officer to maximize the penalties. If you don't like it, then don't break the law. Very simple.

Thats what they should be doing, but most of them dont. And the few officers that do give tickets to other officers or their family members, are treat as outsiders and arent welcome at picnics.

I got off many small tickets just because i had FOP sticker, and cops always asked me if i'm a cop.
