2012 April 13th - Mission Raceway - Street Legals Drag Racing
Attended the Street Legals Drag Racing event at the local 1/4mi drag strip, Mission Raceway Park, an NHRA Division 6 track.
My car, with 1/4 tank of gas, and myself inside, weighed in at 3785lb. It is a 2011 BMW M3 Sedan, 7M-DCT. Completely stock, and no weight savings. Ambient temperature was 13.5C on average. Rear tires were Continental Extreme Contact DWS (yes, all seasons) 275/35R19 on 9.5in 220M wheels. Here are the time slips: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo...eat=directlink Note that since this event was not bracket competition racing, the Reaction Time was for your own reference only; it does not affect the other timings. ----- First ever run, didn't know exactly where to be staging, sorry about that Run done in Traction Control: M Dynamic Mode and transmission in D5. R/T: 1.137s 60ft: 2.178s 330m: 5.734s 1/8mi: 8.601 @ 86.80mph 1km: 11.051s 1/4mi: 13.111s @ 109.97mph (my fastest time of the day). ----- Second run, decided to try manually shifting. D5 shifted automatically at 8k rpm and was extremely smooth, while me shifting at redline in S5 was a bit jerky... and not faster. Run done in Traction Control: M Dynamic Mode and transmission in S5. R/T: 1.042s 60ft: 2.102s 330m: 5.714s 1/8mi: 8.686 @ 84.51mph 1km: 11.176s 1/4mi: 13.253s @ 109.11mph ----- Tried Launch Control for one run. It took so long to setup, that I had to ignore the green light and essentially stage myself. The car dumping the clutch at 4k rpm was so harsh that it felt like something broke. Also, since it can only be used with DSC OFF, the lack of traction made me essentially abort the run. R/T: 4.789s 60ft: 3.371s 330m: 7.878s 1/8mi: 10.965s @ 82.19mph 1km: 13.507s 1/4mi: 15.611s @ 107.86mph ----- 4th run, thought I could try DSC OFF; once again gotten pretty sideways so another aborted run. The 1st part of the track seemed to have gotten slicker as the night wore on. R/T: 0.868s 60ft: 2.921s 330m: 7.635s 1/8mi: 10.704s @ 82.61mph 1km: 13.232s 1/4mi: 15.335s @ 107.92mph ----- 5th run. After a couple of disappointing 15s+ runs, decided to stick to M Dynamic Mode and see if I can crack 12s and 110mph. Run done in Traction Control: M Dynamic Mode and transmission in S5. R/T: 0.916s 60ft: 2.322s 330m: 5.931s 1/8mi: 8.828 @ 86.27mph 1km: 11.275s 1/4mi: 13.331s @ 110.13mph ----- Last run of the night, with most cars gone the event became Open Class so I got to race with a Domestic, a Hemi-powered Chrysler 300C with a software tune and aftermarket exhaust. Spoke to the owner later and he said it should be close to 460bhp. Both of us had excellent Reaction Times and the race was EXTREMELY tight. Run done in Traction Control: M Dynamic Mode and transmission in D5. Mine vs. his: R/T: 0.604s vs. 0.863s 60ft: 2.381s vs. 2.112s 330m: 5.978s vs. 5.760s 1/8mi: 8.836s @ 87.10mph vs. 8.666 @ 84.41mph 1km: 11.266s vs. 11.205s 1/4mi: 13.315s @ 110.45mph (highest trap speed for me tonight) vs. 13.344s @ 106.00mph 0.03s or less than 1/4 car length difference.... ----- I don't know the in and outs for the stuffs on the time slips, so feel free to put your observations here, based on what you can see from the numbers or from the videos. |

Nice write up and videos. Appreciate the fast forwarding between non-essential video segments. Interesting comment on Launch Control. Any other M3s there during your runs?
