Would you recommend ED?
For the Canadian members who have done it,
(1) Would you recommend it? (2) How long was your wait from dropping off your car to getting it back again? (3) Was the wait absolutely excruciating?? It seems like it would be an unforgettable experience, but the husband is concerned about driving in countries he's not familiar with. Especially since the wifey wants to do all these neat alpine roads, like Stelvio pass, etc.! He's the type of guy that parks alllllll the way in the far, isolated corner of parking lots...... We are both concerned about the agonizing pain of waiting for it to be shipped to Canada afterwards , especially if it takes months and you're paying for it all the while... Thanks for any thoughts, Julie

2) - Dropped off March 17th took delivery April 27th ish 3) - YES. As is evident by my mad post explosion on here during the aforementioned period. The three month wait leading up to ED is a walk in the park. After ED, forget about it. Paying for it wasn't a big issue for me, as I'm buying the car outright. It did mean I had to pay for a rental during that time as I can't commute in my 1971 Dodge Charger during the last of the winter months. If it were a lease I can see that being frustrating basically losing time with the car. As for nervous driving in Europe, I don't think your husband should be. People are very good drivers in Europe in general, and the roads are excellent. Also don't worry about minor bumps, the free insurance BMW provides for two weeks (you can purchase an extension) covers 100% with zero deductible [I curbed a ZCP/7MA 359M rear avoiding a horse drawn cart. Car was still drivable, I reported it at drop off, my dealer and BMW Canada ordered me a new one and the insurance covered the full cost (about $1200 tax in).] If you have any more questions feel free to post or send me a PM. James

I would totally do it just because of the sheer experience (one time for most). I am doing ED on September 3rd and not concerned with when I get the car here in Toronto. I am the same way as your husband and I would suggest sticking to Germany. Austria and Switzerland. Going down to Italy or some of the other places can be a lottery from feedback from various people on this forum. If you are doing ED in the fall then be sure to check before you drive through Alps.

2. Dropped car off May 20, car was back in my hands on July 23. 3. I wouldn't call it excruciating, more like hurry up, I want car back. Tracking it was fun, and some fellow members were a great help in assisting. I think I had more information on the where abouts of my vehicle than the dealer! It takes time, and the dealer did advise 6-8weeks for redelivery...i was just inpatient...lol If you have Nav equiped you will be fine, I didnt have that on car, but used the old school method of maps! lol also googles maps is good in planning your routes as well... But picking it up the second time was great too, but the first pick up at the BMW Welt is amazing! I say GO FOR IT!! |

Oh Julie, I don't think there's anyone who's experienced it that would say anything negative. And realistically, the wait is something you'd have to put up with anyways on an "ordered" car. Do it, you won't regret it!!

Let me re-phrase, the wait was totally different for me. It was three months for me from order until ED. Which is about a standard wait. Something I have done before on "other" (cough-Audi-cough) German cars. Then however the six or so weeks after ED drop off, felt twice as long as the initial wait, at least.

I haven't done it. But.
If I had the money and the right person to travel with me this would be a no brainer. I say do it! Take lots of pictures and drink lots of foreign beer!

I wanted to do ED so bad although I didn't have the opportunity to do it with my current car, I made a special trip to Munich last spring and to the BMW Welt, just to get a feel of how it's like.
I was not disappointed and would go again in a heartbeat if I can!
