Computer Monitor for photo editing

Any reccomendations on a monitor? which one do you use? i currently use a 32" Samsung HD TV but i´m not happy with it at all. its too big, i cant calibrate the computer correctly on it, the various settings (dynamic, natural, standard etc) change the photo so much that you think its a diffrerent photo. after editing the pic if i see it on the ipad its different. this dont really matter but i also printed some to check them and they were also different.

Now î´m looking for a monitor strictly for photos. no movies or games so i guess i dont care for a refresh rate. Also i dont plan to give more than 500-800 $ so i´ve limited my options to:

NEC P221W-BK OR P241W-BK
Dell UltraSharp U2711 27”
ASUS PA246Q 24-Inch Professional Super-IPS Full-HD LCD Monitor
Viewsonic VP2765-LED 27-Inch Wide AMVA LED Monitor
Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" LED LCD

ANY RECCOMENDATIONS?

The Dell's are pretty good.

IPS panels have the best color, look on this list, then check for reviews:

I have that Dell 24" in front of me now and have been impressed. Also have the same panel in the 27" at home, also good. I've had four Dell LCDs over the last 10 years and haven't had any problems, great color accuracy when calibrated, too.

I like the Dells. But that's about all I've ever worked with, so I'm biased.

On a side note, one of the profs here is ordering a super Mac. He wants a MacPro with dual 6-core Xeon processors (yep, 12 cores), 32GB RAM, a 512GB SSD boot drive, and dual 1TB hard drives. This should be one screaming fast machine (and run hot as a furnace). I may load PS on it just to see how fast it runs.

photoshop is fast on my mac mini with 8gb ram and 250ssd. imagine on that monster.

thanks for the responce guys.. i'm leaning towards the asus so far, the 27" dell is too big, i prefer the 24".

I would go with the dell ultrasharp, or at least another monitor with an IPS (in plane switching) or VA (vertical alignment) lcd panel. For the most part if the monitor is cheap it will use a TN (twisted nematic) panel. TN panels have great response time, but in all other categories (color reproduction, viewing angles, black levels, etc...) an IPS or VA panel will be better. It sounds like you're doing basic photo editing so it probably doesn't matter but IMO a few extra $100 is worth it for an IPS or VA panel.

I got an eye on the U2711 from dell for some time now. I was looking for the monitor that is the closer to the retina display on macs; which makes me drool everytime I see it. And its the one i found that is as nice.

But the price is killing me. I could just grab the U2410 which is about $500; but I havent seen it from my own eyes. (discontinued maybe?)

Is it the same kind of picture quality or is it another generation or make? I know it got a lower resolution capacity (2560X1440 should require a very big video card to handle anyway), but all the other specs are pretty much the same.

I've had a U2711 for about a year now and I'm generally pretty happy with it. Lots of adjustability and calibrates well. My main complaint I knew going in: 9x16 monitors just aren't as efficient a format for photo editing as 10x16. Though I got a great deal on the 2711, in retrospect I sometimes wish I'd held out for the u3011. Just about tbe same footprint on the desk, but effectively 20% more usable screen area when editing a 3:2 format image.

Of course but its $1400 retail. Saw it on promotion directly from dell at 1100.

After my last post, I found a new u2711 for 779 shipped... Tempting.

I'm done with HP. I currently got two LP2035 and i've returned both of them once and one of them twice because of stains on the screen. After 6 months, they were in bad shape like 5 years old abused that are left on all the time. And I use screen savers and power management all the time.

The colors are now very blah. I tried to calibrate them with a spyder 3 tool, but I cant really say I was amazed. Time for new screens I guess. But this time I want one big enough that I wont need two.

I own both the NEC P241W-BK and the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" LED LCD. I highly recommend the 24" size unless you really need the larger screen. Full-screen on a 24" really shows plenty of detail and you can zoom in by multiples as needed. With the larger screens you need to move further away.

My NEC has the SpectraView II calibration system. This system works great and is fully intergrated and easy to use. Unfortunately, the SV doesn't work with most other monitors due to driver issues. The Dell with a Spyder or other independent calibrator might be a better choice. Of course you could buy the NEC without the SV and calibrate it with a Spyder. Then you'd have something that would also calibrate your laptop, etc.

That makes the Dell a clear winner, IMHO.
