In my case, I dislike black/Antracite interiors quite a lot and the fact that Speed Cloth comes in only one color (Anthracite) may explain my particular "obsession" with leather.

No must haves IMO. I think I'd be quite happy with a pretty much no-option car....

The "must have" for me are

- an Individual interior
- iDrive
- USB/BMW Apps
- Bluetooth
- M-DCT
- Comfort Access
- Homelink

And because BMW marketers are masters of grabbing customers like me by the dangling Bros. they bundled the few things that I must have into all or nothing packages. So to get Comfort Access I must get the Convenience Package (killing the iDrive and the USB with one stone as well) and to get the Homelink I must get the Premium Package (killing the Bluetooth in the process as well).

The Competition Package is a good deal to me, as by the time I sell the wheels/tires I would be really spending only some $400-$500 in lower springs and an "improved" MDM/EDC. No need to install Eibachs as I usually do as the OEM drop is quite good to me.

Not sure about the wear. leather ends-up with cracks everywhere, unless you condition often. Why would you have stain in the seats (ie, why would you drink in the car), odors... maybe. the cloth seats in the M3 looks like they can breath.

I have a couple of dirty ideas on how to get stains and odor in any seat when the moment is right, like they say in the Cialis TV commercial.

It's not that hard to prevent cracks in leather. Condition once every few months and leather can look great for 20+ years, even with 100K miles. Ever seen a cloth seat after 100K miles? Holes and/or wear-through are unavoidable.

Stains? Who knows. Kids, a cup of coffee, something you sat in but unknowingly transferred to the seat. Show me any cloth seat car over 5 years old and there will be some sort of stain.

Odors, for sure. Even if its just a musty smell from moisture. Sure, some of this comes from the carpets, but cloth seats don't do anything to help. Plus, any fart is going straight into the seat cushion

I know that some of you have the comp. pkge on this thread-its not too late to change my order. I was thinking of saving that for a set of track wheels/tires? or do you think I should reconsider?

What do you mean by "killing? I know the packages in the US are different than Canada but I have comfort access with iDrive and USB. I also have homelink and Bluetooth.

No, because it already cross-drilled rotors. That's the only difference between the E46 Comp package to my knowledge. The rotors are cross-drilled and floating. Since the E90 already came that way there was no reason to do anything.

Exactly-hence my decision to opt out of the Comp Pkge. Nevertheless-these are all great cars.

Can't wait to get my car and have a solid track day..

Congrats!

This is why I opted for the Comp Pkg. Like you, looking very forward to actually getting the car. Already ordered a set of 18's and Hoosiers for the track.

The BMW M3 with Competition Package

How this works exactly is revealed to us by Philipp Wänninger, responsible at BMW M for chassis tests at the axles, steering, suspension, and damping systems and a crucial contributor to the tuning of the new Competition Package for the BMW M3. We asked how the electronic damper control EDC works and why the BMW M3 with Competition Package is even faster.

MPW: Mr. Wänninger, what is meant by EDC?

Wänninger: EDC stands for Electronic Damping Control. EDC offers the customer the choice between a number of different damping maps. Even in the BMW M3 E30 it was possible to choose between Comfort, Normal and Sport by means of a switch. In the current BMW M3 the principle was taken a step further: here the damping is not fixed at a set level in Comfort and Normal mode but is regulated to achieve an optimum level depending on the actual driving situation.

Philipp Wänninger

MPW: How does this regulation work?

Wänninger: The current driving situation is determined by means of numerous sensors. Three acceleration sensors measure the movement of the vehicle along the road. If a steering movement is made, there is an immediate impact on damping - and the same applies to acceleration and braking, too.

MPW: How is the damping influenced?

Wänninger: It is mainly the rebound which is adjusted by controlling the damper piston valve.

MPW: How is the EDC in the Competition Package different from that in the serial production vehicle?

Wänninger: In the BMW M3 Competition Package damping in the Sport mode is now regulated too - in the serial production model it is based on a fixed level.

EDC button in the BMW M3.

MPW: How is this done? Is the BMW M3 faster due to the Competition Package?

Wänninger: Yes, the car is measurably faster. In addition to the special EDC set-up, this is also due to the increased width of the rims included in the Competition Package, which permit a larger contact area of the tyres in conjunction with optimum, constant pressure distribution. The lowered suspension at the front and rear axle not only provides visual benefits, it also drops the centre of gravity. The enhanced driving dynamics also meant that ABS and DSC had to be readjusted, too.

MPW: When should which mode be used?

Wänninger: If I were simply going from A to B, I personally would select the Comfort mode. If I were taking a run on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, which requires a lot of spring travel, I would select the Normal setting. If I were driving on an even track such as Hockenheimring or the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, the Sport mode would be my first choice. In any case the BMW M3 is a lot of fun - and it is now even faster with the Competition Package.

MPW: Thank you very much for the interview!

^^ All good points but the EDC can be purchased separate from the Comp. Pkge as well for only $1,000.-A lot less if your dealer provides you the same at invoice price.

As far as lowering the car-there are so many reputed aftermarket set ups such as springs or coil overs that allow the same where you can lower the car even further. Considering I may only track once a year-the $2,500 option for me is better spent on a set of track wheels/tires and new brake pads.

Also see Jeremy Clarkson's Top Gear review on the M3 w/Comp Pkge. He concludes that the standard M3 does the job perfectly. If anything the difference in lap times between the Comp Pkge and Standard is quite minimal in that unless most of us where racing in a pro-car series-those numbers are meaningless.

I still have lots of respect for Comp Pkge owners-if you think its worth it-go for it.

OP -

Our fellow forum members will drive you crazy.
Bottomline - Get the packages and options you want. Not what some unknown person on this forum tells you to get. With that said I can see the advantages/disadvantages of each. In the end it's your money. Get what you want.

For example I will be ordering in the next month and will be getting the following:

E92 SG with FR and carbon fiber

- Convenience Package
- Premium Package
- Heated
- DCT
- EDC
- BMW Apps
- Power rear shade
- Moonroof

The peanut gallery will say moonroof???? No ZCP???? WTF!!!!! You're getting a Honda Civic. But when the M3 rolls off the assembly line with standard features, it's an M3. If you get a Navi, it's still a M3. If you get DCT, it's still a M3. If you have the standard 18" wheels. Wait for it........ it's still an M3. Get the picture. Get an M3 with the options and packages you want.

It is an expression meaning that it is included in the package. In the USA Homelink and Confort Access are only available in packages in the M3.

I want to keep the car 5+ years and I think once a navigation becomes 5+ years old the interior looks really dated with a navi there. Just look at the e46 M3 navi and non navi interiors. Non navi interior looks much better in this current time in the e46 M3 IMO.
Yeah, I'm going the same route to avoid an outdated look in a year or two. So no nav for me. I definitely want the manual transmission, leather, and performance exhaust...all else is icing on the cake that I could go without.

The performance exhaust is a more popular option than I thought.

DCT is expensive,- almost $3k!!! and it is NOT must have...

-get 6MT and save!
-get CF Roof and save!
-get "Speed Cloth" and save!

...must haves ,- Nav, EDC, USB!!!

Oh, and Comp Pack is cool also! M3 really stands out with that one!

ZCP is a major waste of money, so is EDC. Get the mdrive and call it a day (for interactive control of your car). If you must have tuned suspension, get KWs and some nicer/wider wheels e.g., BBS CH etc. instead of the comps.

Not BMW leather! Now you're going to say, 'well if you properly maintain it' and I'd agree. Cloth is the same though if you maintain it well.. I think cloth is sportier, but I'm not as much into the luxury thing. Though I agree with you on the staining. Lots of solutions available though.
