Coming from an e46, looking at a e92. Thoughts on price?

Hi all,

First post on the forum. I used to spend a lot of time over at m3forum, and realized that the e9x community over there is lacking!

I found a vehicle for sale by dealer that I want your thoughts on.

Year: 2008
Miles: 21k
Exterior: Alpine White
Interior: Black Novillo
Transmission: 6MT
Others: Navigation System, Cold Weather Package, Premium Package, Technology Package, 19" wheels, Power rear sunshade, back up sensors, Rain sensor and auto headlight, aux input, Enhanced Premium Sound, probably some more that I'm missing.

It looks like the car was originally driven in Hawaii. Should I be weary of rust or other salt damage? From initially inspecting it, the car was cosmetically perfect. I found nothing that would detract from the value of the car, and it drove great. I have not yet looked at the carfax or service records, but I am assuming they are fine for the purposes of this post. I'll definitely ask for them if I go see it again. I know many people advise looking for rod bearing service and spark plugs, but I'm not sure if this car has enough miles to warrant either. Is there a thread any of you can link that has maintenance in more detail? I think my search function is disabled due to me being a new member or something.

The dealer is asking for 41k firm, no negotiations. Based on the values of cars that people have purchased in the huge pricing thread, it seems a little high. What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: thanks for all the info, looking at a new car now, linked below!

Welcome to the forum.

First, $41K is way too high, even with low miles. I would have a PPI done on the car no matter what year, or miles or anything for my peace of mind.

Phil, it's Momentum BMW here in Houston, I noticed you're in Sugar Land.

A lady actually left me a voicemail (not the salesman that I worked with) saying that she had "great" news... What's an appropriate price for that car? Edmunds has it at $35,500.

The nice thing about the car being driven in Hawaii is that there are few, if any, roads which allow you to beat up on it. And you can't go on real long trips before running into water. Which may account for the low mileage. How did it get out of Hawaii and how many owners has it had? I wouldn't worry about salt corrosion, especially if it appears the previous owner took care of it. I'd get the dealer to pull the maintenance history records for you to look at.
It sounds like you might have found a reliable car. The only questions left are do you like the color and are you willing to pay the premium for the low mileage?

fuddman, I would imagine that the dealer paid for it to be shipped from Hawaii to Texas. That cost may be factored into the asking price? There were 3 owners in Hawaii. Here is a link to the listing by the dealer, I realized I didn't include it originally. I do like the color, and the low mileage is definitely a plus, but not at 41k.

http://www.momentumbmw.net/used/BMW/...dce7074633.htm

I also found this vehicle today for sale. It's a lot newer, but has 36k miles, and is missing a few options, namely the back-up sensors and cold weather package. Dealer is asking 49k, still certified. I imagine this dealer will be more willing to negotiate on the price. No guarantees though until I talk to them. The thing I'm worried about is that it looks like this car didn't get the 1200 mile service done. What do you guys think?

@ 37.5 to mayyyyybeeeeee approaching 39k and that's ONLY due to mileage. The car is still an 08 and 39k is 09 territory but again, dealer is banking someone wants a low miles 08.

Here is another at advantage bmw downtown.

http://www.advantagebmw.com/certifie...a790750f96.htm

I just bought a CPO'ed 2013 with 6500 miles from them. They came down a little but I think dealers realize the people buying them are buying them knowing it's the last V8's M3's and thus a dwindling item.

Ask for Charles Cannon, tell him Craig referred you and you are bimmerpost member. He will work with you on price.

Also, I found that 3 owners seems a lot for a 2008, I also worry about the bearing/rod issue.

Thanks, Templar. Unfortunately, I'm only looking for 6 speeds right now. I looked on the site there and the lone m3 was all they had

If you consider a M235, I had ordered one with m brakes, electronic steering wheel, carbon fiber interior. Blk/Oyster with 6-spd.

No heated seats! Otherwise it looks great. It seems like the CPO should run through May 2017 and not 2016; ask about that. The asking price is a good starting point. You should be able to get the seller down $2-$3k based on mileage.

Fortunately, the heated seats aren't a huge need here in Texas I will ask about the CPO. Based on the listing, I think that they are saying that it is an existing CPO that will run through two more years, which initially started last year. I think $46,000 for the car would be a good deal.

Looks good to me, carpe diem! it's much harder to find 6-spd's and this one has fairly low miles. What is the mileage warranty? On my CPO'ed its 75K.

Perhaps go to BMWusa and look in the preowned search function for options and milage based M3's. I found a nice Z4M out of state doing that. The dealer will handle all paperwork and ship the car. keep us posted!

Looks like the CPO mileage runs through 100k and lasts until 5/10/16, Don't think I can average 30k+ miles per year

that's a nice car at 46k if you like black cars

to me, zcp and the LCI tails that come with 11+ is a huge upgrade over the prior models. I would only consider 11+ zcp, but JMO

im also here in Houston, but going to the opposite direction as you. from e9x to e46 haha
