To Charge or not to Charge

Hi,

I guess I should first introduce myself. I'm Danny a british lad now living in NY. I brought a stock 2011 e93 M3 back in December with under 6K on it. Since then I've got a little carried away with modifications and my pocket is quickly becoming just a container for old coins a random lighter and a through the wash receipt. No thanks I guess to this forum and those kind gents at ACM..

Anyway, since the momentum with mods is in full swing, I was considering going all out with an ESS 625 super charger and a big brake conversion.

I'm sure there's a lot of info on the site but just wanted to know what the respected M3 community thought of the modifications and how it effects the daily drive of the car and overall reliability?

Engine mods already include Dinnan Pulley, ESS Chip, IPE Exhaust, Air filter.

Thanks,
Danny

Nice ride. Why SC? IMHO, will you never use that much HP, especially in the US? If you got $$$ to blow, sure, why not.

It's a question I struggle with tbh, why do we do anything to our cars. I guess having that power put simply would be fun.. Ideally I'd really like to do some track days which is proving difficult with a vert..

Big Brake Kit is not worth it unless your tracking.

If you want an ESS SC, my recommendation is the VT1-550. I think its the best kit of the bunch.

Why do you recommend this kit?

Danny, I lost your number in my phone somehow. My car ended up needing an Idle Control Valve. I'm picking it up on sunday, and I can bring her to ACM to have that part removed on Monday!

If you haven't experienced the full affect of this V8, then don't charge. Car is plenty fun without a charger; unless you are planning on beating some charged Mustangs, etc. etc....

Hi Chris,

That would be amazing dude. Been speaking with IPE for a replacement part which is proving rather difficult. Perhaps I can meet you there on Monday? I'll PM you my number. Thanks

I've taken it to Raceway park a couple times and left a little disappointed at the whippings received. It's not like I'll be able to use it to the full extent much but it would be nice to squeeze some more power out of her. I just don't want to sacrifice reliability to much..

Well you will need new tires if you supercharge!!

You will not need the Dinan pully either. Also, probalby stick with an ESS kit since you already have their tune... Just some thoughts!

Do it if you can afford it!

I am a recovering modaholic and I am here to help you: I took a 430 HP Vette to 700 Hp and could not stop until I finally sold it.....

Okay, what I want you to do now, is add all the cost of those modifications up and look at the total you spent. Now, consider when you sell the car it is going to be twice as hard to sell it (due to those modifications). Now, take that total and subtract 50% from the total cost of modifications - if your lucky that is what you will get back....

This should make you feel sick and stop you from making any more modifications at this time....lol

Agreed ^^^

I knew about Vettes but this car I have steered clear of modification for now...does the M3 need internal work done with the added power of the supercharger? ....like piston, valve, connecting rods etc? Im guessing it can handle the extra power with no internal work but at what HP point do you need to do surgery...?? lOL

The 650 and under kits do not need internal work. Anything above needs a built engine I believe.

strap on and boost away. from what I've seen and personally experienced the S65 handles the extra power well. I also say stick with ESS tuning but the other companies are also solid.

I'm to understand the motor can quite safely handle the 625 kit, anything after that a rod bearing upgrade is recommended..

I try not to think to much about the money I'm basically pissing into the wind as like you say, it does induce severe headaches and sickness. I guess I tell myself I can put it back to standard and sell the parts off but I'm sure I'm just kidding myself...

I've read some scary stories about pistons making a swift exit and bottom ends saying hello to the top but how common is this? Would seem that the cars remain quite reliable and I've never heard any issues with transmission..? I'm already pimping the missus to pay for this thing, any issues and I'll have to sell the bitch.
