Is CIC (2009+) Nav that much better than 2008 (CCC)
Debating weather to get 2008 or 2009. Is the 2009 THAT much better? It is worth the $4,000-5,000 price difference.
Whats the MAIN difference with 2008 and 2009. I know 2009 is hard drive based and a better screen. 2009 you can add Combox for cool options. As far as plugging in addresses or actually navigating is there much of a difference? How are the updated to CCC navigation?

I don't think it's worth the price difference. I rarely use the navigation, and when I do, the CCC works fine. I play most of my music from the iPod and it does it fine with the CCC. Sometimes the interface is laggy but it isn't that bad.
Not to say I wouldn't want the CIC but for $5000, it's not worth it just to get a pretty screen and a different controller. |

If you are interested in the car then no matter which MY you buy, mechanically and -arguably- performance-wise it will be exactly the same car. If you are interested in the latest Nav/iPod/iPhone features and then some then only the MY2009+ will give you that. If you are interested in both the car and the Nav then there's only one choice. |

I rarely use nav or anything related to the 2nd hump....wouldn't be worth it for me.

I'm curious, how much did this cost to do? Was it just a matter of switching out the controller and the center console trim piece?

This has been covered before however.....it is a case of changing the trim piece around the gear stick, and these are obviously different depending on what you have, 6mt or dct. Then you plug in the new controller and all buttons work as they should.

Was not worth it for me. I like the simplicity of the 2008 knob/menu button combo, and I don't feel hindered by the fact that the system is not HDD based in spite of the fact that my maps are out of date...

Buddy of mine has the old one and I have the newer one.
I can't stand his, but probably because I am so used to mine. Apples and oranges, but both fruit. Do whatever you want.

it's not worth selling your 2008 and taking the dep hit on. To me it's not worth $5000 or so to make the switch, especially if you're happy with your current car.
The most important feature I want from the CIC is: 1. send addresses to car's nav directly from PC 2. aftermarket add-on to play DVDs and videos ($800 add-on?) I don't give a crap about, google apps, facebook, twitter, high resolution, new software interface, 3D maps. You're driving a car, not playing with a computer. Seriously that's it, and #2 costs more money to add on. At the end of the day, it's just a nav and it does what it's suppose to do, navigate you. Now, i heard from others that the most important feature is the ease of use of the CIC controller. It's more intuitive, user friendly, less sensitive. So it'll cost you around $700 or so to buy the controller and trim to retrofit. That's the upgrade I'm willing to do. Also, with CCC, there's lots of people who pirate recent navigation maps on DVDs and sell them for like $40 on ebay, that beats having to go the hard drive route and buy it from a vendor or from BMW. Edit, the "plug and play" retrofit parts costs around $450 from Tischer Last edited by mdosu; 09-28-2011 at 11:29 AM.. |

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277690 The short story is, yes it's plug and play, depending on the software version of the CCC you have on your car. It's worked for most people, again depending on post purchase CCC updates BMW has performed, but if not applicable, the best indication is your car's manufacturing date, I think any post 3/2008 builds should be plug and play. Again, read the thread. |

With that said personally I absolutally hate both nav systems. I went way out of my way to get the car WITHOUT nav and use my iPhone which is a million times better.

Yea the conversion is 2-3k. I think i will be picking up a low mile 08 and get the conversion done.
I just got a 2012 128i with Nav as a loaner. Hate to say it the CIC is growing on me. I test drove a 08 m3 with the CCC and the graphics looked like it was from the early 90's. Horrible! If thats what im gonna be looking at everyday..i want the HD version. Yes i WILL be doing this!

I Recently serviced my 08 335 with nav and they loaned me a 2011 535i with nav. Iam a nav guy and dont like driving cars without it. I dont think i would buy another BMW without the 2009+ nav system. It might blow all the same whistles as its predecessor but just the sharpness of the screen and how fast it reacts to your command is something i would purchase a newer model BMW for.
Ya maybe its a 5000k difference but look at it this way, your ultimately buying a younger car witch in-turn will bring back a better resale. So put a smile on your face and getta 09

I bought an 08 without realizing the Nav system difference and ended up doing the upgrade since I plan to keep the car for another few years. It costed me about $3k including coding costs and used hardware.
