I've always loved the speed and AWD of wrx's and sti's but I've never been 100% happy about how they look until now......

Not a big fan, the rear is too much with the pimped yellow tails. Looks like the Mitsu Evo in some angles, that's not a compliment.

Have always liked Subaru for their AWD, durability, toughness. Frds who have Subarus always highly recommend them and many of them are putting some very high mileage without getting too much of troubles. I like the idea to have a WRX wagon as DD especially here we have to deal with horrible rainy winter with sometimes snows.

Front looks good. Look how big those rear wheel arches especially are though compared to the wheels themselves. Makes it look like a little kid wearing daddy's pants.

Had a 2012 STi. Love the funky look of them, even with the wing. This new concept looks excellent. What I can't stomach is a 4cyl that gets 20mpg highway. Yes, I understand the engineering it takes to get that much power out of 2.5l, but in an age where a 4-wheel drive full size truck can get 21mpg I think there is room for Subie to step up the game.

This thinking is exactly what is killing the auto industry for enthusiasts. The STi is a high performance car with a very large turbocharged 4cyl engine and full time AWD. It's rated at 23mpg highway. You are looking at the wrong car if you're trying to save at the pump. Don't come back and complain when the next STi has an 8 speed automatic...

It's also pretty dumb to compare a high performance model of one model to the low performance model of another. Yes, a V6 Ford F150 4x2 is rated at 23mpg highway but the performance model (SVT Raptor) is rated at 16mpg highway.

At what time has the auto industry ever been better for enthusiasts? I hear this "it's dying" war-cry from 'enthusiasts' a lot, but frankly cars have never been faster, safer, or more efficient. But I'm open to hearing about the glory days where things were better. It's this type of thinking that keeps the auto industry, performance included, moving forward. It's why we left the days of a powerglide and 500cu.in motor running 13s and can now accomplish the same performance at 1/4 the displacement and twice the efficiency.

And for what it's worth I was referencing a super crew 4x4 F-150 with a 3.55 rear and the V6 Eco-Boost rated at 21mpg. It has 360+ hp and 420+ ft.lbs of torque. It's still an apples to oranges comparison, but my point is that if something that weighs like a heffer, has the aerodynamics of a brick, and has substantially more power can pull off MPG within 2 of the STi, perhaps there is room to grow in the STi.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the next STi get a direct injected motor and bumps its MPG to somewhere around 26-27.

I think the STi is a great vehicle, hence why I owned one. I also think it's lagging behind in how economical it can be, WITHOUT sacrificing performance.

At what cost will we be gaining this fuel economy? Thus far, many large automakers (I'm looking at you, Audi, Porsche) have been nixing the 3rd pedal and replacing them with 8 speed autos in order to comply with stiffer regulations regarding fuel economy and increase all out speed. There is a joy in all out speed, I get that, but I don't think you'll ever hear a review of the Ferrari F40 in which the reviewer complains that the car lacks paddle shifters.

They've also been liberally using DI which presents a whole other set of issues with regard to reliability. Both my 135i and S4 have had issues with carbon buildup. An RS4 needs carbon cleaning annually at a cost of $800-1k. That's far more than the difference in fueling a non-DI engine for the given timeframe.

Why can't a zippy little rally car just be that? They have more economical versions of the vehicle currently available so why wouldn't those consumers who value that over performance opt for them? I appreaciate a purpose built car. If long hauls on the highway are your primary use for the vehicle, perhaps a rally car is not the proper choice.

Meh, if things just weren't so fat, they'd get better mileage. If everyone didn't insist on a panoramic sunroof, eighteen way adjustable seats with heat and cool functions, power everything (remember when MB had power adjustment for the center rear view mirror?) and all sorts of other fluff.

Economy is always a consideration for me, I have considered and E90 M3 numerous times, but just can't get past the 14/20 mpg thing when plenty of more powerful cars get significantly better mileage. I rarely get the EPA city number and I just personally don't want to drive around something that threatens single digit mileage. I borrowed a friend's STI for a few weeks a couple of years ago, filled it up the second day I had it and drove around town, 70 miles to be exact and had used 10 gallons of gas. I was not driving like a nice, considerate person, but my M Coupe was no slower than that thing and got 16-18 in similar driving.

Relatively small, strung out motors with turbos sure do hate petrol when they're on the boil, and that's a problem for those of us that don't turn a blind eye towards poor mileage. Fun cars are great, I think we're all on here because at least part of our buying decisions are fed by wanting a fun car, but when some get noticeably better mileage than others, it's hard to ignore.

I will point out that I apparently have my own limits, when buying the wife's car, the much better mileage of the X1 28i was quickly ignored for more power and torque.

Any examples? Those cars also have that sound and rev till 8.400 RPM? As you say there are alot of better cars out there, so pick one of those. Why should all cars be the same and please only one group of people?

An AP1 S2000 revs a good bit higher and gets better mileage by being lighter. Of course it's not really comparable in terms of practicality. I didn't say I hold it against anyone who buys a less efficient car, I will always prefer manuals to their more efficient automatic and dual clutch relatives. Again, I stated that economy does come into consideration for me. Not you, carry on with whatever you want, provided you don't drive into me, it won't effect me in the slightest.

I also don't recall saying anything related to any cars being alike, or trying to please everyone. There are enough maroons over here driving Priuii at 90+ mph and feeling awfully pious about it.
