New Mercedes C63 AMG to get 4.0 V8
Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance off-shoot is planning to provide the successor to today’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 powered Mercedes C63 AMG with an all-new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 powerplant – the same unit earmarked for the company’s upcoming Mercedes SLC sports car.
The new unit has been developed along modular lines and is said to share the same individual cylinder capacity, bore centre spacing and other specific details with the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder earmarked for the Mercedes A45 AMG and Mercedes CLA45 AMG. Insiders indicate the new unit, which is claimed to deliver over 450bhp in an initial state of tune but is said to be capable of pushing out up to 600bhp, will eventually replace the naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8 used exclusively by the Mercedes SLK55 AMG, providing a stepping stone to AMG’s larger turbocharged 5.5-litre V8. AMG boss Ola Kallenius stopped short of officially confirming the new engine to Autocar at the Los Angeles motor show at the tail-end of last year, but hinted smaller engines were coming. “We’ve already had downsizing to 5.5 and sophisticated direct-injection technology – we’ll see more of that in the future,” he said. We’ve already gone down to 5.5 and that's the technological road we’re on.” As well as flaunting a new engine, the replacement for the C63 AMG will be the first of the German car maker’s performance saloons to offer the choice of rear- and four-wheel drive in right-hand drive versions. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/sc...-amg-get-40-v8 So it seems that the Merc will stay with a V8, plus awd optional. Not bad.

I think it's great that AMG will give C63 AMG buyers an option for RWD or AWD.

The new M157 5.5L V8 has a LOT to live up to in regards to the M156 6.2L V8 it replaces. On a side note and in conjunction with my previous post, I would actually like for ///M to offer an AWD version like how AMG is offering with their line. I like having choices. If marketing will have anything to do with future line-up, there eventually will be. I never thought that BMW would offer FWD models any time soon, but they are on the way very shortly...

Ya I am sorry but the new m3 with an I6 motor simply wont be able to compete with performance in terms of pure speed and power to a TTV8. IF merc can stick with a V8 than why can't bmw for the m3. Makes no sense. TT 4.0l V8 could have built nicely off of the knowledge from the s65. But no, had to go to an I6. Another generation where merc will smash bmw in pure speed.

Maybe but there is more to the equation than just pure power. There is hp to weight. There is handling and braking. But, if drag races are your thing then you are probably right.

+1. With dual clutch, handling at least equivalent to current E9x M3, I'm very interested.

But if you are going turbo anyway, than why not compete in all facets. I hope the m3 still bests the merc in all the other measures too, but why give up one of the best selling features of these cars to most buyers-acceleration in a straight line. You don't have to have one or the other with turbo technology. No longer do you need a huge engine which is really heavy to put out power which in turn would disturb weight and handling. A small 4 litre v8 could have launched the m3 in front of merc in every category and now it simply wont happen |

The M5 has a turbo V8, so seems natural for the M3 to have a smaller engine. Even with a six cylinder though, it doesn't mean the car would have to be down on power.....just look at the GTR.
BMW seems to have greater differentiation in power/speed between the M3/M5 than do AMG models. With the M5 having 550bhp, the next M3 might even have less power than the current C63. Just how it is....still plenty quick for me. |
