Like footie said, with a nice body kit, and an ECU tune, this car could not only look good, but put down 400/400 and would likely leave even modded 335i's in the dust. For the price point, that is impressive beyond words.

p.s - Yes this car is still on "probation" with me pending evaluation of long term reliability problems. If it has the same waste gate and HPFP issues of the 335i's, that would be very sad.
you and i think alike. even against a thick mainstream. id expect the s4 to base close to 50k. still a bit pricey.

In the UK the S5 is £39,400 where as the S4 is only £34,250. That's a saving of 13%, what is huge.

I would image you could take roughly 13% off the S5 price in the US and come pretty close to what the S4 will cost.

You think so?

The S5 base is around $52k. I think Audi may put this car in the $42k-$45k range. Maybe that's wishful thinking.

The handling was also very impressive, it all but match the rally bred EVO on the track and slalom and was well ahead of the 335xi. Proves that while BMW are undoubtedly great at making rwd sports saloon they are not that great when it comes to understanding the finer point of awd.

Better to stick to what they do best and leave Audi to do what they do best.
+1 on everything........the DSG is really quick.......cant wait for a comparison between a 335i equipped with DCT transmission with this S4 with DSG
Anyway, if I was ever going to go for a Sport Sedan, it would be the S4. 335i sedan doesn't look as a good as the S4.

And Evo X is really quick around the track....damn that car was made for the track

Do it, so we can have a run on at NE Drag Way! M3 4.0 V8 w/ DCT vs S4 3.2 TFSI w/ DSG

The 3.2 Liter A4 with the S-Line Appearance Package starts at 46K, no way the S4 starts at under 50K.

Yep, a fully loaded A4 2.0T costs close to 50K, so it's wishful thinking that the S4 will be priced less than that.

There is no way the S4 will cost about $8k-$9k LESS than the S5 when the S4 has Superior Technology. Then absolutely NO ONE would buy the S5 until the mid-life engine change, which I think everyone is expecting.

Audi's almost never cost less than comperable BMW's, for some odd reason.

That's ridiculous. So the S4 will end up costing more than the S5???

I don't understand AUDI math.

If you look at the specs they optioned the 335xi with the all season 17" and not the summer 18". The other cars are on summer 18" so the handling numbers are not apples to apples. I'm not saying the S4 is not a great car but lets not take to much from this "comparison".

Do you really think a tune is going to get you 70 hp on this car? I highly doubt it.

Can't wait for the top gear review of S4 vs 335i/xi. It would be sweet!!

and for the S4's superiority, its because its got 30 more hp, which could be under-rated just like the 335.

Both cars are nice though.

I believe the new S4 will command a hefty price and will be significantly more expensive than a 335. in summ, are we comparing apples to apples?
Actually they have the same number of performance levels

A4 < S4 < RS4
3 < 335i < M3

Where "3" and "A4" both refer to base models like 320i etc. To your question in bold, I would absolutely say yes. The 335i creates a new icon within the 3 range and this is shown since the 3.0TT engine has been used in other BMW platforms.

The problem is that they're not direct competitors. Pricing and equipment vary too much between the S4 and 335i, and the only difference between a 335i and lesser-engined e9Xs is the engine itself. Brakes and tires can be the same (although wheel designs still differ), and the suspension is the same regardless of the trim level, provided they have the same packages. The S4 boasts more tech over the top-of-the-line A4, and you have to throw down the money for it.

I believe it's safe to say that the M3 and RS4 are direct competitors, despite the still-monumental price difference, at least in the US.

Mercedes and Lexus offer much closer competitors, both price-wise and packaging-wise.

^^^

At some level I can respect BMW for this because you do get a LOT of badge whores out there! But I wouldnt criticise Audi for using "S" since they have always had it. If anything BMW are taking a leaf out of Audi's book creating 3 performance levels instead of just having 2

Respect to both though, since BMW has created the "35i" performance level which is impressive with the new 3.0TT.

Why not? The Dinan tune gives an 80+ HP increase for stage 2 on the 335i.

It just depends on the company, 70+ is not impossible or unlikely.
