honestly I think BMW just running out of supply. The M's are selling like hotcakes. Allocations are used to maintain production etc.. I;m sure the brand is doing so well that they can't keep up. Thats my guess.

I don't see it lifting anything soon if at all on the M3. However it may with M5 and M6. I don't see those models being as high in demand as the M3.

I have no proof of this but I am in firm belief that BMW has purposedly kept demand high by decreasing the output. Even though in 2009, it was wreck for the economy and especially hard for car dealers, but back then you can choose from 100 MT Coupe M3 in the southeast---- look at it now, barely 15 across the US. Did they saturate the market too much in 2009 2010 time frame and they leared their lessen OR are they becoming greedy and net profit is KING?

^^ED is not done, just not available for BMW dealers as a "Free" allocation. The only way you can do ED as of now is by getting a dealer to give up one of their stock allocations.

NO news on when it will end if at all. Just what we were told this week.

Does this apply only to M models, or *all* BMW models?

If so, that sucks! I was telling all my friends about how fun ED was, but if they have to pay Euro MSRP, it probably isn't worth it over US invoice.

I wonder if this was a dealer driven anti-poaching tactic. Most dealers are adverse to ED out of pure laziness and a longer sales cycle. I hope this is just temporary.

So certain dealers will have more allocation than others correct?

correct some dealers will get X amount of allocations and others will get more or less. I am not sure how BMW base the amount each dealer gets but I believe it has to do with volume and location, but don't quote me on that, thats something Ryan and Checa would know

Not sure if this applies to all BMW's, I have a text into Checa I will find out and post it up here. I believe at this time it is only M's but I will find out for certain and post as soon as I hear back

Ok just heard back from Ryan, this is only dealing with M's. Reg BMW's are the same as before nothing has changed.

Let's call an apple an apple. if dealers have to use their own allocation for ED then they will push up the price to US delivery level and you still have to pay for travelling to europe to pick the car. this is NO longer a pricing advantage. If you pay same as US delivery why go through the hassle of picking it up in munich ? AND if you want to visit the Welt you can just book your own trip without ED either way you are not saving anything.

Well, I would hope the dealer would charge you only ED MSRP. Which is a few thousand off regular MSRP.

If you do the Porsche ED you pay the same MSRP as in the USA and the 19% VAT in advance (refunded back in the USA).

How do you like them apples?

To set the record straight: this is not the end of ED.

To put it clearly and simply; the only change is that ED allocations now come out of the dealer's own allocations. Which is pretty much what Jimmy explained.

The confusion comes from the fact that Steve Thomas announced that they're not doing it anymore. Basically the way I see it, they sell so many M3s (standard/domestic delivery) that it's not worth it for them/there's no point for them to bother giving up one of their allocations and give you an ED.

Looks like a lot of people got scared/pissed/disappointed (understandably so) but don't worry, there are plenty of other dealers out there that are willing to give you the ED you want.

^^We are unable to do ED bc we don't have any allocations to give out. We have all the slots filled.

Does a dealer have "regular" allocations, in addition to "M-model" allocations? In other words, if they sell all their M-models for the month/year, you're screwed if you want to use that dealer for an M-model, regardless of price?

We get a certain amount of each model/car.

For example we will get X allocations of 201x M3 and X allocations of say 328i etc.. Once you sell out those allocations your done.

Canada has never had a discount for ED.

So the only thing we get out of it is a free car x (few) weeks free insurance while in Europe.

Which actually adds up to something, as renting a car like an M3 is quite expensive. And enjoying the autobahn and alpine roads (like Stelvio, Grossglockner, etc.) with an el cheap rental is kinda sucky. Plus the fact that cars like the M3 - considered "luxo/exotic" are usually not covered under the usual credit card insurance plans, so you have to foot for the rental company's insurance (at least a few hundred EUR)

I would imagine this is pretty rough news for you guys at Steve Thomas BMW. You guys are the ED M specialists!

Hopefully this is just temporary and will resume eventually... I really wanted to do the ED experience again once my current lease is up. Without the significant savings it is a tough sell.

^^Yea it was a bummer for us. I know a lot of our customers are very upset but there is nothing we could do. we are at the mercy of BMW on this one.

So does this mean that all of your allocations for the entire model year (2013) are already spoken for?
